Lightyear's Track MX5 back up car.

I went with a friend to look at this car

(talked him into building an MX5 track car). He didn't think it was good enough, but for the money I thought it was great. So went down the next day and bought it.
I have had enough of waiting for cars to get built, so this will be my permanent track car back up.
Should have this fully built for around $6k in total, as I have some some bits laying around already. I want to keep it mild, and capable of doing around a 1:53 at Phillip Island.
It has about 225,000km's, and is tidy enough. Pending on parts arriving, this should be built in a week or so.

The car will owe me about $3k by the time I offload the bits I don't need. So it is about as cheap as it gets for a good base. For sure a win. Bought cash, and I did some good low balling.. 😈

More interestingly, how many mx5s have you had? Surely by now we should just be calling you Stefan.

P.s. yes I'm jealous of your car ownership keep it up.

I think today's acquisition tops the cake...... Bought a holiday house on Smiths Beach. Google where it is. Proof of my dedication to the best track in Aus.
I may rent it out on weekends to the better behaved P.F members.

Close enough. 2 x MX5's, 1 x VN Group A (will be a VP Supercar) Commodore race car, 1 x VF 2 SS wagon ( Commodore tow car), 1 x Mazda 3 (no pics car) and the Mustang.
As to how many MX5's, no idea. I have an NA6 rolling shell at my brothers farm. If you count cars like that, then a lot.

Nice work mate, only 3 and half hours drive from Barbagallo.

Seriously though, congrats. I have a family member at Cape Woolamai and it's an awesome place to be.

It's an MX5, don't need a mechanic. But I may need one for the commodore..

yeah smiths is nice, I liked the vibe of Flynn's beach more but the scenery at smiths is more plentiful.

So anything really wrong with that MX5?

Congrats on the house purchase too. If you don't hold all records for the track though will it still be worth it?

There is nothing really wrong with it, couple of dents, nothing major. Cheers. At Phillip Island I am a god, any records to be had will be mine. 😈😜

This one is a basic, but comprehensive track set up.
B.C coilovers, big front sway bar, cheap extractors, 2.25" exhaust, track wheels and tyres, rollbar, cheap pod filter and silicon elbow for an intake, brake pads, brake lines, Torsen diff, cheap light flywheel, race seat, harness and steering wheel. Maybe swap the folding roof for a c.f roof.

You really need to sell that Commodore bud, it's just not you.

I have to have a go in the Commodore for a year. It's coming up pretty good. As always, a car jumps in on the queue. So hopefully it will be ready by the end of next week. At least it will be sorted by the time I sell it. (If I sell it)
I like the idea of always having a car that can be used for when a race car isn't working, or you just want to go out for some fun without it costing a fortune. Might buy more MX5's so other people can have some cheap fun track days. Without having to go slow.

My car looks like it will be going to the new owner in a week or so.

So the new build will begin shortly. Early LM Commo (VN or VS) with LS powahs. I think it's a good recipe for fun on a budget...

I have a wing sitting in the shed, so figured I may as well use it. If I feel like it, I may do a couple of the MX5 Vic rounds in Super Modified and see if I can better the lap records. Only thing I will need is an Oem hardtop. Pretty sure I can do a 1:50 or under in this car at the Island in Super Modified class. Will be the cheapest sub 1:50 car to ever lap P.I if I can pull it off. Total spend should be under $8k.

With the intake do you just do a short cold side intake?

Yep. Last time it cost me nothing, had a joiner and pod filter lying around. Should still be here somewhere. Making a cold air box around it is the time consuming part.

I have an MS3 here, but I don't think I need to use it on this car. So I will just relocate the AFM to the drivers side. The only reason I would put in the ECU is if I need a few more revs.

I was just working out what needs to be removed from the car so I can do it all in one go and not forget something. For a mildly modified track car the list is long.
    Inside-
Steering wheel, airbags, under carpet rubber and seats.
    Outside-
    Softtop and maybe the bonnet.
    Mechanical-
Radiator, fans, intake, exhaust and headers, front of motor for timing belt/water pump and seals, clutch, flywheel, diff, chassis braces, brake lines, brake pads, rotors?, wheels and all fluids.
Should take a full day at least. And maybe the whole A/C system as well as the P/S pump and brackets. But this can be done later.
Everything has been ordered, and should be here in the next week or so. In the mean time I will throw it on the hoist and remove the parts listed above.

Had to go down to the house today and couldn't help myself from dropping in to the track. Never been to the visitor centre before. MX5's are not a good choice for hwy driving, lots of ambient noise.. At least it has working A/C. Can't wait to throw a race seat in so I can fit in properly and see traffic lights.

And a pic at my new beach

I spent a few hours in the garage today. Managed to get 5 important things done. Adjusted the drivers seat, centred the quick release steering wheel, rolled the guards, installed the coil overs and threw the track wheels on. Looks a lot different now. Still waiting on a couple of bits to arrive, but it's all mostly here. Will pull it apart and get stuck into the clutch, flywheel, diff, timing belt, etc soon.
