    AR51 w/GSXR1000 buggy

    Hello everybody.

Well I thought it was about time I pulled my finger out and post up some pics of my buggy.

My understanding of the history of this design is that a bloke in the US had a piranha way back when and designed his own double A arm front end for it, which he used to sell as a complete unit. You would basically cut off the front of your piranha and welded his on. He later did the same with the back suspension and drive. He then released plans for a complete buggy filling in the blanks between front and rear with what is basically a slightly altered, longer and wider piranha style chassis.

I am running a 2006 GSXR1000 with the woolich racing black box tuning software and a wideband O2 sensor and gauge (which seems to work pretty well)

    Heres some pics.

Some of you saw this in the CAD drawing thread.

And this is my latest mod. I refuse to get too excited about this because it is totally unproven and may well explode when I try and use it. I have made an electric reverse using components from a 1FZ toyota starter motor that I got off ebay. I had the gears cut by waterjet out of hardox 400. The aim is to take the ratio from 4.4:1 up to 17:1. The cut of the gear teeth was a bit on the rough side and needed cleaning up with a cutting disk in places. I also needed to do some machining on the center gear after I welded the 2 pieces together. This stuff is crazy hard. I'm pretty sure this isn't standard for gear manufacture but I'm hoping it will work. The rough edges will bed in I'm sure haha.

This thing has consumed way more time and energy than I ever thought it would. I thought I had it done then when I went to fit it the solenoid was 15mm too long to fit between the sprocket and disk! So I ended up machining 10mm off the solenoid housing. This meant filling the gap between the solenoid magnet and the cast alloy housing with epoxy resin, as trimming 10mm off the end meant I would cut through the folded metal tabs that hold the magnet in place. Remember that trick next time you are machining a starter motor solenoid in your lathe!

Not only that but the throw of the solenoid was not enough to properly engage the edge products gear/disk that I am running. So i have a new mount coming that will move it 10mm closer to the disk and should engage properly. The original setup with unmodified starter would occasionally make grinding noises rather than move me backwards.

Like I said this is totally unproven but here it is.

    Cheers everyone!

Headed out on Saturday to a Rally sprint event, my first ever motorsport haha (apart from motocross). Up against 2 SxS buggys and an assortment of WRX's, escorts and hyundais I came first overall. Unfortunately my gopro only had 30seconds worth of battery in it. The track was pretty awesome, cut out through salt bush and claypans.

    And back home today...

Very cool, I wonder if you can lower it, throw some slicks on and take it to a track day?

Depending on the type of event, yes I could do that. It doesn't meet the full on cams off road specs ( it isn't 38mm DOM etc) but club type events I guess I could enter (maybe?? I'm not really sure) It's getting bigger front calipers next. Right now it has pretty much the smallest wilwood caliper in the catalogue (ps1) and they suck.

    I like this a lot.

Any ideas on weight? (Sorry if I missed a mention of it).

I'm not sure of weight. It's not that light though.

Holy fuck that looks like fun!

I drove something similar on holidays with about 15hp (?). It was a blast! I imagine this is somewhat better!

So I decided I need bigger front brakes. The tiny calipers on it were a bit too small, so I got these beautys. These are the wilwood dynalites used on the X2. If anything they will be overkill.

So I finally got around to a test and tune with the new brakes. They seem pretty good after I adjusted the bias bar. This is at the gnangara pines.

Headed out to dowerin today, ended up with 4th place behind a couple of WRXs and a ford laser (who came first!). The track has dried right out since last time which had me sliding all over the place. And once again I was 10 seconds faster each run. If I drove as well in all three runs as I did on my last I would be 1st/2nd!

Awesome. Although would it be worth chucking some rally tyres on? Those fronts don't look to have a lot of grip leading to a fair bit of understeer?
