finally got the hub back together yesterday and took it for a drive. its now driving awesome with the fuel pump hoses sorted. pastes 275s at 60kmh and hauls ass all the way to 7500rpm

unfortunately i think all those lean-outs have damaged the head gasket because after an hour of boosting around it ate about 3L of coolant!!! fucksake

Where's the coolant going? Overflow, exhaust or crank case.

Seems like it is pressurizing the overflow. I have to test it

Before you get carried away, try changing the radiator cap. If still pressurising overflow, then yeah most likely HG.

Took the car to a mechanic who did a leakdown test and borescoped it. BHG into cylinder 6, and every piston shows signs of detonation.

Weighed up the risk of fixing the current engine only for it to crack a ringland or shit a bearing down the track from detonation, and decided I should just pick up another 1UZ instead. $400 later and the trusty old AE71 wagon is getting me out of trouble once again

Got a VRS kit on the way, will order a new timing belt and water pump as well. Give the engine a bday, swap over the cams and supercharger and other bits and pieces from the current engine and then swap it in

Well this thing is surprisingly still alive. chews water hard but the engine still chugs along for the moment. The last bits i need to refresh the spare engine should be arriving this week

Engine out at last. Took for fucking ever since the previous owner decided to make a fucking abortion of the wiring. Had to mark up so many wires and chop them as they were hard wired to the transmission controller, or the CDI, or the water meth, or the body loom. Fucking mess. Gonna be a fun few weeks re-doing the loom to make it serviceable. Look at this abortion!!!

Was pretty happy that the engine came out with the headers still attached though. Would have been a headfuck to remove them

Next steps: Remove the cams and ARP head studs (if they exist) in this engine and add them to the replacement motor, order some new engine mounts since the current ones were already broken in half, and start repairing the loom..

Also many thanks to Foamy for letting me borrow his hoist/workshop space to do this swap. Wouldnt be possible to do an engine swap on a soarer in my garage..

Looks like an ARP on front corner of engine, If the heads have heavier valve springs as well I'd be swapping heads over too.

Nah it already has a PWR unit, and a PWR intercooler and PWR trans cooler! I dont want to know how much the previous owner paid for that shit lol

Started pulling the BHG engine apart today, kelford cams and ARP head studs confirmed. That's nice at least. Haven't pulled the heads off yet, will be interesting to see how much detonation damage there is/isnt

Depends on how I feel once it's running again. Pretty damn angry at this car right now, but I need to set it right first

Heads are now off, metal head gasket didnt show any signs of splits etc so I assume it was leaking between the metal layers or something. Some of the cylinders pictured below

Looks like the prev owner was also telling the truth when he said he had the torque converter built for it too. pretty sure the OEM converters arent green coloured

Oh well, only way is up from here I guess

In pic number 3 it appears combustion gases from the cylinder where going into the water jacket which would have been pressurising the coolant system and pushing coolant out the o/flow. Hard to tell from the pics but if that's the case, there will be tell tale soot marks on the gasket. I had the exact same scenario with a built sr20 a few years back.

Given the history of this motor, this is totally reasonable-who knows how long it's lived with a hurt head gasket. I think I read back on the first page that it was using coolant and super rich mixtures. Too rich can be just as bad as too lean, so who knows how bad the damage was when you got it.

Now you'll know exactly what you have, and you'll have control of the tune, so should have a nice long life if you're a little conservative on the tune-up!
