Rebuilt LS Breathing Like A Steam Train

    If I don't laugh I'll cry.

My mechanics got my engine started for the first time last night. Fresh L98 rebuild with Mahle pistons, bottom end was assembled some time back by a previous mechanic and recently we've only assembled the heads.

It's very difficult to wind over and the breathers are pumping out smoke (much worse than below when it's warm apparently). Below 2000rpm it seizes almost instantly.

    [Click for video]

Mechanic was concerned about piston-to-bore clearance but he called the original machinist (who didn't do the assembly) and he suspects the original mechanic has put rings in the wrong order.

Does that match the symptoms or does anyone else have further ideas on what the cause might be?

    Choo choo

Logical debate beats name calling any day. My Badges Of Honour so far in PF: Racist, Bigot, Islamaphobe, Numpty, Moron, Far Right Wing Nationalist, Far Fight Wing Fascist, "raving fucking lunatic", "dumb" & climate "denier". AND they are just SOME of the pathetic tags that I've been labelled by SOME here. HINT: Those labels are signs that the accusers have lost to logical debate.

Maybe it's time for them to check some facts. Here's a good starting point: http://www.mostdamagingwikileaks.com

Did it sit for a long time between being built and now? Rusted up rings maybe?

I would guess it's grabbed a ring. We can all guess all night but, either way, it's coming apart

would a compression test show if there was something odd with rings (eliminate bearing clearances or something?)

Pull it apart. Who built it?

Basically this. It could be a couple things but either way it needs to come apart and then you'll know

Yeah I guess cunts fucked either way, just trying to prepare myself for best and worse case scenarios. Will be picking it up tomorrow and removing the engine on the weekend.

Fingers crossed it just the rings that need attention and not pistons or bores.

If its that tight, aint gonna be good....

If it was a machining fuckup or something like that if would of felt tight by hand during assembly - one would assume.
Mystery till you pull it apart.

Humour me. Wack a torque wrench on the crank, throw it into neutral and turn it over with the torque wrench. How much until it clicks?

This. Those heads are coming off and I'm hoping for your sake the bores are ok...I would also guess a ring has folded over...

A mechanic assembled one of my engines. When I went to check it with the head off still i noticed a small shadow on the bore, vertical about 4mm wide. Asked what it is, he didnt know. We popped out the piston and the middle ring had a small piece snapped off the end and was sitting on the side of the piston. He thinks it was because he used his big ass compressor which he usually used for large diameter V8 pistons (on my measely 87mm pistons lol) and it didnt catch the end of the ring properly. Probably a reasonable conclusion.

I'll have a crack on the weekend. The bottom end did turn over fine on the engine stand.

    This.
When was it last spun by hand?

    Undoubtably.

However, did someone fill it with oil? As in, fill it.... to the brim.

It was on an engine stand a few weeks ago spinning by hand to set the crank scraper clearances.

Given my other experiences with the car it's much more likely that the original builder (no longer in business) rushed the assembly. Everything else we've had from the machinist has been good.

Have had the same issue with similar levels of steam train-ing. Rings had grabbed on 6 of 8 cylinders and destroyed the ring lands.

Can't hurt to comp test it before you pull it out. If anything it may isolate the problem cylinder(s) and help you find the problem. Although it will probably be pretty obvious when it's torn down, the more data you have, the better.

MFJ and Dale are spot on, no patch ups on this one.

Don't keep flogging a dead horse, pull it out, pull it down and let us know what you find

Couple things to check if it doesn't stare you in the face when you pull it apartů

More obvious is ring gaps but also check back clearance/radial depth of the rings and ring grooves. Had one years ago where the ring grooves weren't deep enough. It would run until it got warm and then lock up. Let it cool down no it would be free as a bird, warm it up again and it stall again lol

At least you haven't fucked every part in the engine like what happened to me when one of my pistons let go.
