So I got a generic email from go via (toll mob in Queensland) about this. Say what? I thought I'd wait for a letter from my kids' daycare first.

Not the Caddy? Wonder why they're different to the other near identical VW vehicles.

Some cars in the upcoming recall were only built last year. Were they really making dud airbags for such a long time, or is it the airbags being stockpiled for years until they get used?

Pretty sure they've been replacing old dud ones with new dud ones because at the moment there's no alternative.

vw used he same steering wheel bag in cars for over 15 years. just the plastic cover was different.

edit, what sturmovik says is true for subaru.

I've been in contact with Mitsubishi Australia about grey import Delicas a fair bit over the last 6 or so months, and amazingly they've agreed (at this stage) to get the parts and do the work on Mitsubishi Japan's behalf.
Even more incredibly, they're prepared to address ALL of the outstanding recalls on it (6 in total).

Surely it's not just Delicas, but there's currently no way for an aussie import owner to determine if their car is affected, as they don't appear in any of the lists the ACCC or local car companies distribute.

The thing with imports is the factory-stamped VIN doesn't always carry over when complied here.

You'd have to contact the manufacturer with the original VIN, and go from there.

I've been trying to get confirmation of this, they say in the FAQ that it's a "similar" design from the same manufacturer for the beta airbag recall and that it's a perm fix.

Jeebus fuck so now my vw alltrack is on the recall list as well as the 3 cars that contributed airbags to my subaru. Looks like I'm going to unplug the airbag controller from the subaru.

Well every single Jag XF from 2008-2015 is in the new list for drivers and passengers airbag.
The drivers side airbag in my XKR is the exact same unit as the XF, but no XK/XKR on the list, yet.
It's a good thing I have no intention of crashing!

But looking at the big picture, it's millions and millions of cars being "affected" (got to be >5 million worldwide by now?) and a bankrupt supplier.
It will take years for new bags to be produced & supplied, not to mention waiting for a spot in the queue for a dealer to do the work.

Telling people to go back to Japan to get it done isn't a great look. If it kills someone there will be trouble.

subaru were upto 2 months ago replacing the old takata bags with new ones of the same number and design. basically the old ones rust and fall apart internally. then when they go pop you get a facial of metal. new ones dont have rust therefore wont do this for 6-10 years. that gives them time to get a new design out. thankfully thats happened with subaru already.

on one hand it could be argued that you chose to purchase a car with no local manufacturer support. on the other it looks shit if it goes wrong i agree. but does that mean that if i buy a new model from overseas and import it that i can expect ful factory warranty?

No, but if there is a life threatening defect and you engage the manufacturer locally about it they should provide some help.

Should the local arms of car makes assist those with imports in terms of recalls? Yes, absolutely.

Warranty? I'm on the fence with it.

I was as surprised as you, and told them I was prepared to do it at my cost if necessary, if they could supply the airbag. Which they wouldn't.

We'll see if it actually happens, but they appear committed at the moment:
Currently we are working with MMC to facilitate in arranging parts to be ordered and a process to be provided, so this can be given to the Dealers to carry out the recalls on their behalf.

Once we have this information and parts available we will be in contact to advise which Dealer can carry out the recalls. Please be made aware this unfortunately will not be a quick process and are working with MMC to have this resolved in due course.
The Australian VIN is different to the Jap VIN in that it has a few extra digits on the front. Just remove them and you can enter your VIN into the Japanese manufacturer's website (using google translate) and get an idea of what is still outstanding.

Unfortunately this kind of thing is (or was) another nail in the coffin for stopping or restricting grey imports.

The reason why they would do it is if there was to be a fatality, itís their brand thatís on the front of the car which would be plastered in the news regardless of grey or not. A big reason why Honda is leading the charge in the news as being proactive recallers vs other manufacturers.
