    Sierra Cosworth Track Car

    Quite a few nice cars on here I have seen in Zoom Magazine. Love them and want to share a little as while used to buy the magazine religiously and then stopped, I have realised that you guys are proper petrolheads who regard all sorts of cars.

    Whilst this car will be low power comparitively it will be fast around the twisty bits.
    I want 500bhp with as lttle boost as possible.

    Where do I start?

    I grew up with escorts having a few quickish ones and always wanted a Cossie. Knew this car since late nineties and was owned by a mate. Always wanted it and asked for first dibs if he sold it. He called me and told me he was going o/s and I bought it straight away 2005 (I think).

    Was "stage 3" or 300rwhp or so and lived in Aust since '93 with 60kmiles so was pretty clean and rust free. On an UK forum I actually found the original owner who brought it to Australia and owned it from new.

    Long story short but I caught going a weeeeeeeeeeee bit fast in it so bit the bullet and decided to only go fast on the track. I think I have rewritten the book on how to devalue a car by spending money on it!! I want the car to have no weak links so I am not scared to drive it hard.

    A few friends with cossies have influenced the direction of the car and it has been in the build for the last 3 years or so. Had a baby and working hard has slowed the build down a touch - frustrating but I have not lost the love.

    I am an Electrical Design Engineer with a medium size Engineering firm so have access to machinery/trademen that have helped a lot.

    Got some custom brakes made for them.

    355 6 pot fronts, 330 4 pot rears with handbrake spot caliper. Ex Elfin calipers from friends at Leigh Engineering.

    Got a bit of a Centrelock fettish so got 2 sets of these (ex Glenn Seton);

    and a set of these (ex Nissan Primera);

    And made some adaptors with some help from a mate who owns Roaring Forties (who also has a very nice RS500 that he needs to finish!!!)

    Another mate and me have made a cage to CAMS specs for it - and put a pedal box in it;

    Got some Motec gear for it and some new/custom looms;

    Anyway got a new engine built for it from a new block and new old stock cylinder head. Got all the RS500 gear on it and hoping for 500hp or close (really only want to run 28psi or so).

    Got a bit carried away and decided to dry sump the car;

    And get a hollinger for it; mmm load cell gear cut.

    And adapt a 8.8 in mustang irs with eaton plated diff (thanks Vic).

    WOW this thread has made me realise I have really crap/no pics. Will sort ASAP.

    awesome car mate! ... will look forward to progress posts.

    Also agree that a nice cosworth would be awesome to own, but I dont think I could ever do it, ... and thats coming from someone with a heavily modified rotor!

    Nice. Any reason why you went the 8.8 instead of the DJR 9"?

    Thanks for all the comments.

    Availibilty. Tried to buy a 9" from a few places initially and got turned down when I offered $6k for one with the ratio that I wanted. There are two types one with ratio 4.1 and lower and one that is above. There are heaps with the +4.1 and not many with the lower. 4.4 and a 1:1 top gear = not much top speed.

    So.... would of cost too much. The 8.8 owes me just over $3k and is brand new.

    I guess just did not find the right 9" at the time and wanted to move forward with the car.

    Cool. Doubt i will break the 8.8 but interested in what you say. The housings come up once in a while on ebay UK. Have you done one before? The 3k you say would be worth it if a genuine case as they will not devalue. I would spend that money. Anything else custom will not be worth as much just like my current solution if I sold on.

    However - I doubt I will break the 8.8 and what is the extra 0.2 inch worth? PRICELESS according to my WIFE

    At the end of the day it's all to do with reliability and what sort of lsd/locker/spool you can get in their. 8.8" should do the job.

    Love the Cossie.
    Would be even better if it was a Saff. But still great to see as they are so rare in Oz.

    Thanks.

    What is no-edo spec?

    Dyno plots a plenty coming - ECU will log and closed loop - SDL will log aswell. Got a Motec PLM on board.

    8.8 wise got good feedback from a racer with the Eaton plated carbon posi LSD so that is what I went for.

    Awesome stuff, love the old Sierras since seeing them race in Group A waaay back. The centre locks are sweet too.

    That first pic with the MOMO wheels on... was that the same Sierra that was featured in Hot or Fast Fours in the mid-90s? That combo of white Sierra and those MOMOs looks kind of familiar...
