Bought a Nissan Gazelle to daily - nek minute FJ20 project car.

So after looking at 70's jap cars that were too far gone with rust, hacked up or had no options, I then bought this back in october with plans to daily.

Seemed like a sound idea. AC still worked, powersteer, can club reg it and really tidy for age.

IRS car as well, so added bonus of not having shit drum brake live axle most of these got delivered with here.

Only down side is that it has a smelly CA20e with a 4 speed auto slush box. Convert to manual was the only thing i wanted to do to it at first, then lower and some cheap wheels.

Anyway, as found stock as a rock. So much 80's pop up headlight RWD win. Some of my mates my mates were like, is that a supra? is that a AE86 corolla? etc. Kinda looks like a delorean???

No its an S12 Gazelle fool.

Tried to find a manual conversion for the CA but I stumbled across a FJ complete with everything.

    Perfect candidate I thought.

Had to drive 4 hours to get the dam thing though, serious mission but had to be done as so rare now to find complete

Has a 280ZX 71B close ratio gearbox attached to the FJ bell housing
ECU and loom is Microtech MTX-8 (found out its actually blown after trying to power the ECU up)
Microtech hand controller to tune it
Bigger injectors of some kind - I think they are Z18ET
Spare DR30 Turbo inlet manifold, cam cover and turbo flywheel / clutch setup (bigger diameter)
Headers to suit a 510 1600 (probably won't use them, they are pretty ratty but the exhaust flange is good to make a start on a new set)
Spare starter and a few odd & ends.

    Nice work.

I've got a manual pedal box here I don't need. Shoot us a PM if you're after one.

You'll need to make a gearbox crossmember for it, as that part of the tunnel is different on auto cars. Further back, and further apart. Everything else swaps straight over. There's even a blanking plate in the firewall for the clutch master cylinder. Tailshaft, if you can hunt down a manual S12 one, you can just use that with the FJ box. IRS and live axle ones are different, but all you need is the front half from either, bolted onto the auto tailshaft.

You need to do something with the engine mounts, as the FJ S12s ran a different crossmember. You also might need to go hunting for brake and clutch master cylinders that will clear the intake manifold, as that one looks like a DR30 one, with the longer runners.

IRS hatch with those front lights it has says its a late 85 model MK1. Nice rig, use to have a early 85 solid rear (with a fj20e conversion that I never got around to installing).

These things handle great, you can do the S13 front suspension upgrade for wider track and easy brake upgrades. Z31 rear ends are identical from memory, so R200 long nose LSD and the CV's from a Z31 should be a good upgrade, or HR31 trailing arms might even be a good option as they probably bolt in.

Thanks mate, already got a pedal box had to get it out of New Zealand! You dont have a tailshaft by chance do you? Still looking for one.

Gearbox cross member no worries, easy.

Got engine mounts coming! stay tuned for the solution.

Yeah, its a DR30 inlet, they do clear the stock clutch master though ok from other conversions that I have seen.

Yep, Dec 85 build and thanks!

Yeah, they sure handle good, I had a S12 turbo notch years ago. Was a great beater that car.

I have S13 SR20DET front brakes and hubs for it already

Also have some nice coil over suspension goodies, stay tuned!

Got the FJ20 mounted up and ready for a tidy up.

Compressions good, no oil leaks. Had a look at the bores with a scope camera, can still see nice cross hone marks

Mine was sold to some dude just before Christmas. And then he vanished lol, so it's still sitting here. I don't believe I've got a tailshaft. Worst case, you can cut the yoke off an R31 Pintara tailshaft, and weld that onto yours once you've figured out the length.

These were called a MK1.5, so Feb '85 through to mid-'86. Then they got a nice facelift, and referred to as a MK2. The hatches were the GL pov pack, but in the MK1.5, they threw in IRS, electric mirrors, and cloth on the door trims.

With the front end, grab a pair of S14 castor rod brackets, so you can run S13 adjustable castor rods. The brackets just need a bit of trimming to clear the lip on the chassis rail, and one of the bolt holes elongated.

That is weird, did the dude pay for it?

Yeah, i might have a lead on a tailshaft through facebook but not heard back.

Theres one in a nissan wreckers over in SA but they want 175 plus freight so might just do that if cant find one local.

Pretty hard to find a manual pintara, none in any of the wreckers around here it seems haha. They would be too short as well i imagine, as they use a longer C type gearbox?

Mine has pretty good interior, still had seat covers, floor mats, window shades etc when i got it. Even has the factory sunroof blind in the bag in the boot.

Im going to use S12 bottom arms with S13 ball joints for now, can keep the stock castor rods then.

Got a full Z31 suspension bush kit for it and BC racing coilovers

Series 3 910 Blueys used the same B box, from memory. Would be worth checking those out, as well.

Nah, he never paid for it, but insisted I hang onto it so he could pay for it on Boxing Day.

Yeah, already looked into those. There are none left. All gone to datsun heaven it seems.

My last S12 was a Mk2 JDM RX turbo. Had the CA18ET single cam beast.

I plan on keeping the PS and AC, got the brackets and parts tonight for the FJ

I had one of these with a fj20 turbo for a little while. My experience was not one of good handling at all, in fact it was the worst handling car I've ever owned.

Looks great. It might be the photo's, but I'd rather the original wheels than those steelies. FJ is great!

The stock wheels are lame imo.

Im actually trying to find some period correct JDM wheels with the correct offset for my car. Not easy to find.

I wish I could still find those around here. 5 years ago they littered the earth, but they all had the CA20E or VG30E. Sold as "200SX", the VG30 cars were all IRS and R200, the CA18ET import cars had LSD's and R200's. Until I started looking them up I never knew they came with FJ20's in them, but now I wish I had bought one years ago.

Im guessing your in the states then? At least you got turbo ones.

Australia was given the CA20e and that was it. Such a nugget engine.

Got the pulsar turbo though, go figure.

Nah, no turbo cars in the US. Only CA20e and VG30e. All the CA18ET's were imports.
