I went through the same musings, and although I wasn't going to kit it out like you, I wanted the one that was least likely to leave me stranded off road. Although I haven't done a lot of off road in it, the Cayenne is super capable, and has surprised a lot of staunch Toyota crew that I came across in some pretty remote places for work. I specifically didn't want an aging euro TD though - the small saving in fuel economy would be smashed if anything ever went wrong with it. And the 4.8L V8 in the Cayenne isn't bad on fuel - I get 10.5L/100km on the highway and 13-14L/100 driving across the city (because Adelaide?).

Rightly or wrongly, I discounted the others because:
Q7 - Too big. No low range? Don't need 7 seats.
ML - Not great off road? Questionable reliability, or was that the MLs?
Touareg - Would have been next on my list, but not available with a V8

I also wanted air suspension (standard on Cayenne S) and a tow bar, which is hard to find on GLs and Cayennes, and a massive cost to retrofit.

I looked for a few months to find a Cayenne with an off-road pack/lockers and nothing came up. Do the GLs/Q7s even have them as an option?

I didn't actually drive any of them before I bought the Cayenne (I didn't even drive that before I bought it!), but the Cayenne appeared to be the best all-rounder from the reviews I read, and it has done the right thing by me for the last 3 years.

the the absolute biggest thing i would be looking for is which model/s you can fit proper rated recovery points to the front and rear, because the factory tie down points are unsafe for the loads a winch or snatch strap will place on them and people regularly die from using dodgy recovery points.

if you have a towbar fitted then the rear will probably accept a receiver hitch... but all of those things have low-hanging front bars and i don't think anyone makes "real" bullbars for them so i suspect you'll struggle to find proper front recovery points. i have snatched out a VW touareg on straddie and a Merc GLS (i think?? longer than a ML) on fraser and both times i had to put the strap over a suspension arm. i told the owners what i was doing and if they were really really really sure they wanted to risk bending the suspension.... but when the tide is coming in they don't have much choice. from a quick google i think the touareg might have some options - i found some saffas talking about getting them custom made in cape town, so maybe you could get a local shop to knock something up for you?? but to me that'd be key - no recovery points, no taking it off road.

second thing i'd be looking for is availability of under body bash plates to replace the flimsy plastic aero trims underneath the car. they always fill up with sand, contribute to the car getting stuck and then they get torn off when the vehicle is being recovered.

and final thing - you always see private school boys taking dad's euro 4wd out from their elegant six-bedroom holiday on straddie for a burn down main beach. when they get home i reckon the closest the hose comes to the vehicle underbody is when the boys are loading up the gatorade saxaphone..... dad probably doesn't even know it's been on the beach. so when you're looking for one pay very close attention for rust, cuz i reckon most of them have been on the beach but have never been properly washed.

the correct answer is V8 100 series (I got a facelift sahara for around your price).

the less correct answer is Discovery

the wrong answer is VAG group.

The towrags are cheaper than cheap. There's a reasonable looking one for $3k.

Eg Check out this Volkswagen Touareg.

No, wait... it's only 6cyl auto... my bad

Flame suite on (I realise there's likely slight motor differences plus another 600kg)

Nah, the VR6s in the Touaregs are a big of a dog. Plus they've got timing chain issues potentially, too (motor, gearbag, front cradle out).

that's the diesel v6 not the petrol isn't it?

Timing chain tensioner on the 32. FSI v6 can be done in car and usually only gives trouble around 300,000kms according to google.

They'll go a lot sooner than that.

Have seen some with chain rattles with 60,000kms on them. Leave them for too long, and the guides fuck out too.

Seems a pretty decent price imho.

It actually doesn't look half bad, so long as it hasn't been fingered by a swede or abused by a desperate housewife, and a thorough inspection comes up clean, then...

    .... maybe ....

It's a funny ad, i like how they mention it only has one key, obviously got a price from the dealer for a replacement LOL (lucky your uncle Jack can make Land Rover keys...)

It's early enough to still have iffy build quality, and being the supercharged 8 it's thirst will be prodigious...
"Where can we get hold of a Vincent Black Shadow?" "Whats that?" "A fantastic bike," I said. "The new model is something like two thousand cubic inches, developing two hundred brake-horsepower at four thousand revolutions per minute on a magnesium frame with two styrofoam seats and a total curb weight of exactly two hundred pounds."

I ruled out the RR's because all the ones I sat in of about that vintage were thoroughly putrid and the interiors has just disintegrated, plus the olds are looking at buying a 2013 era model in the near future so seemed kinda redundant.

I haven't driven any of the vehicles mentioned in this thread thus far, I may get behind the wheel and hate all of them rendering the whole exercise pointless but that's why it's a hypothetical thread

fatz: does yours have the height adjustable airbag suspension and diff lock package? Makes a big difference apparently.

Fucken I'm DJ has been pestering me with cheap early V10 toerags over the weekend, seriously got me considering one as a semi throwaway experiment. I think it would be hilarious with massive lift, muddies, light bars, Xrox style bash bars and a tuned straight piped 5l twin turbo v10 diesel.

I'm a huge euro fan but i'm starting to come to the thinking that these things just don't last as good as the jap 4x4's.

Where as you see millions of pre 2005 land cruisers, patrols and hilux's out there I pretty much never see an old euro 4x4's.

Think first gen ML merc, I cant remember the last time I saw one on the road and their reputation is that they are a complete unreliable shitbox. Or even old range rovers, I remember looking at the last of the British ones pre bmw takeover years ago and the thing was 5-6 years old and the entire interior trim was falling out and rattling, even the first of the bmw ones 2002-5 you don't really see anymore. Land rover county, used to be everywhere when i was a kid, haven't seen one in years. 10 years ago when i would go to fraser island it was full of old disco's, last 4-5 trips I've done over there in the last 2 years I've been lucky to see 2-3.

Now think 80-90s Hilux, they are everywhere. Hilux Surf, still see heaps. Old pathfinders, heaps. 100 series land cruisers, millions out there, 80 series is the staple of back packer fraser island 4x4 rental, and tag-along tour operators weapon of choice. Patrol, millions. Every generation of Prado ever made, still see bucket loads. Heaps of first and second gen mitsi challengers. Pajeros are everywhere, and so on.

It's my day off and i'm on a roll here so bare with me.

Lets look at some resale values

    2000 Merc ml430
    new $95,500
    redbook today $1,500 - $3,400 trade, $3,900 - $5,800 private

    2000 Landcruiser GXV
    new $82,990
    redbook today $13,400 - $17,300 trade, $19,600 - $23,500 private

So not buying the premium merc badge you would have been $10000 better off on day one, and up to $20000 better off selling it today. All up your 30k richer buying the toyota.

    2000 BMW X5
    new $107,500
    redbook today $3,300 - $5,500 trade, $5,900 - $8,100 private

    2000 Nissan Patrol
    new $65,990
    redbook today $7,800 - $10,500 trade, $10,500 - $13,200 private

So your $40000 better off on day one, and up to $10000 better off today, and if you had the diesel one you'd get $10k more on day one, and 10k better off today than the v8 petrol on petrol comparison I made. So all in all worse case your 50k better off best case 70k better off buying the nissan.

So the questions is, why are these things worth nothing second hand? Is it because people are snobs and they only want a new model merc? maybe in the first 5 years, but when you start talking 10-15 years when they filter down to pure off-road, bogan family car, and P plater use I think it would be cooler to have the fancy badge. Its because they are overpriced to begin with, unreliable as soon as the warranty runs out, and the parts prices are inflated to the point that the 3rd and 4th owners cant afford them, which compounds the reliability problems they had to begin with.

early ML's were made in America, that probably contributes to why there's not many around.

What euro 4wd's were available when the Surf/Pajero came out?

Range rovers, land rovers, none of which are still running.

Don't get me wrong, I love euro cars, we own two. And I would love to own a good reliable euro 4x4 that can be a good daily driver and still take a pounding on Fraser, but i'm yet to find one. And by "pounding" i don't mean driving down the beach at low tide to see the shipwreck and having some tinnys at eli creak. I mean serious off the beaten track inland work, dune work, super dry soft fine sand work, bouncing over unexpected tree root at 60kph, snatching out other cars that are stuck, going down tracks that haven't seen a car in a month where branch's are going to be scraping down the side of the car, Etc. I own a toyota that does all that shit just fine with air conditioning and apple carplay.

Don't forget the relative limited number of Euro 4wds sold compared to Japanese ones.

I think they (and the GL longer varients of the same thing) still are made in Alabama?
