Jaguar XKR Portfolio - the poor mans Aston

Since i'm finally taking delivery of this thing on monday, it was time to make a thread.

Yep, another Jag… I thought long and hard about ticking the V12 box on the bucket list, but I couldn’t bring myself to spend $80k+ on a 15 year old Aston that would likely drain my wallet, no matter how much I tried. And although the cheap V12 TT Mercs were calling out to me, I just couldn’t see myself in one. The Aston V8 Vantage was also in contention, but I as much as I love them, I just couldn’t justify the extra money it would have taken to get into one. In the end I decided to stick with what I know… how predictable!

This is my midlife crisis car; a 2009 X150 XKR Portfolio Coupe. 1 of 10 delivered in Australia, one of 250 delivered worldwide

    Looks like this:

Bit of a long drawn out drama, I had no intention of buying one of these particular XKR’s, and the previous owner had no intention of selling it either, yet here we are!

Story starts last December, I was stuck in traffic, and this car pulls out of a side street two cars up in front of me. I saw the Alcon brakes & the wheels and realised it was a Portfolio, had a bit of a meltdown and without thinking, jumped out and ran up to it, tapped on the window, gave the bloke my card and said “if you ever want to sell this car, give me a call”

By the time I got back into my car, the phone was ringing… we chatted for a bit, and then the discussion turned to his XKR, I explained that “sometime in 2017 I’d be in the market for such a car” and we should talk later. I had no money, waiting on the house to be sold, & the money to be dispersed from the separation / financial settlement, I didn't know when I'd actually have the money to buy the car...

He was OK with that so long as I left him a deposit and got him the balance when I could. He'd been through the wringer himself before so he was sympatheic to my situation. We agreed a price, I gave him $5k as a deposit, and he went out and bought a 2014 XKR for $150k, LOL yeah, he didn’t need my money… In the meantime I scraped together enough money to pay him the lions share of the agreed price, and the balance would be paid when all my legal shit was sorted. Well, finally, it's sorted...

Specs for those who are into specs

    4.2L AJ40 V8 quad-cam with VVT, all alloy engine
    Eaton M112 Gen4 supercharger with water-to-air intercoolers
416hp / 313kW and 560Nm, supposedly did 12.9 down the quarter when new, we’ll see about that
ZF 6HP26 2nd generation transmission with paddle shift
All leather, heated seats, 550W Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound with iPod, Bluetooth, etc, etc
Active exhaust, plus a number of minor upgrades over the 2006-2008 XK’s

    The “add ons” for the 2009 Portfolio over a regular XKR;

Shadow Grey paint, unique to the Portfolio
6-piston Alcon front callipers with 400mm rotors
4-piston Alcon rear callipers with 350mm rotors
20” Shadow Chrome alloys (19” won’t fit over the brakes!)
Polished billet side vents, stainless steel pedals, engine spun alloy veneer
And a few little bits & pieces borrowed from the XKR-S

This being the last of the 4.2L cars before the big update to the 5.0L in 2010, there were some predecessors and other which are related to this one; the Apex XKR GT3 (the race car), the PalmerSport XKR (the trackday special), the 2008 XKR-S (what I actually wanted, but they never sold here), the 2008 XKR Portfolio (what I was looking for, to turn into an XKR-S replica), and finally this one, the 2009 XKR Portfolio.

This one's got a few kays on it, 149’000 to be exact, it was the previous owners daily for nearly seven years. He bought it from the Ferrari dealer in Adelaide, a bloke had bought it new for his trophy wife but it wasn’t posh enough for her so he traded it in with only 2k on the clock, for a Ferrari. Ha! People with money eh?

Despite the kays and being used daily, it’s in great shape, not a scratch on it, not a door ding, nothing except a slightly scuffed wheel, and being Shadow Chrome, that’s a mofo to fix… But I have found a new-old-stock front wheel in Germany, which I’ll have to have a think about…

Full Jag dealer service history (not that such a thing inspires too much confidence) and it’s like a new car inside & out. Amazing condition for the age/mileage/history.

I've been collecting parts & shit for it over the last six months, got a few things to do and a few things in mind.

My old man told me “buy the car, drive it and be happy, you haven’t been happy for a long time” so that’s what I’m gonna do.

It's gonna be a bloody long weekend....

That actually looks quiet ... good.

I know two Aston DB9 owners in Perth. If that's any indication they appear to be troublesome cars compared to other stuff of the ilk. I reckon you did the right thing.

Damn that pewter silver does look good.

Saw that you posted a photo of it a few weeks ago with no story (or reaction). Congrats!

Looks nice. Almost been bitten by a few X150 chassis lol.

I know this guy- http://www.alloydoctor.com.au - give him a buzz about rim repair. He does good work and can do shadow chrome.

Might be before your time at JLR, but do you know anything about this XKR test mule?

Was spotted out & about in mid-2008, but with a 56 plate it was probably around for a couple of years before that.

It had race seats and a cage in it... the rumours I hear was it was going to be a GT3-esque street car, like a production version of the Palmersport XKR, but JLR pulled the pin on it.

Isn't it great how certain things make everything better. Driving your car, forgetting about trivial shit or serious shit, that bothers you. Enjoying life. Being happy. Well done mate.

I was never aware of that specific project but I was there during the 56 plates. Did drive a couple of 150s and 250s with those seats and cage etc but it was usually just because I could not because I needed to. Most of that AJ133 charger stuff would top out in the 170s but the XKR-S I drove just squeezed 188. Long story short- dunno, maybe. Sorry I should have paid more attention

Vote name change to John "2 Jags" Prescott. At least I hope you still have the XJR.

Bloke up the road from me has one of these (not Portfolio though) and does regular track days in it.

Looks pretty stock apart from the tow and battery stickers but it sounds phenomenal
