Jaguar XKR Portfolio - the poor mans Aston

Finished off the DAB+ install tonight, that meant mounting the factory antenna (from a 2010MY-on) in the rear bumper, and getting the wiring in behind the boot trims.

    Antenna (upside down)

Goes in behind the bumper, fits just fine, even a had a hole in the chassis for the self tapping screw to go in.

And a hole in the boot floor for the cable to run through, and the rubber grommet on the cable fits it perfectly.

I used an aftermarket antenna amplifier, and bugger me, there is a perfect square cutout in this piece of foam that it just sits in perfectly.

    Unbelievable...

Went for a drive to see how the reception is, amazingly it's better than the DAB in the XJR, there's one "dead spot" up the road from my house, where the XJR always gets a blip in the reception, no problem with this setup.

Then it was time to add some bling. Swap out the cheap shit plastic paddle shifters for some machined alloy ones from the F-Type (and Range Rovers).

Much nicer! And thanks JLR for going with a "parts bin" approach!

The alloy paddles are just a bit taller than the plastic ones. Nice touch.

I'll get you a pic on the weekend.

Kenne Bell, don't think so, it's a lot of dollars, if I was going to spend that much I would have just bought a 5.0L

Paid for the Quaife last night, will be a few weeks until I have it, then it's a matter of installing the bloody thing. Will be worth it though, open diffs are teh suck.

How much messing around is it to fit on on the OE supercharged intake?

Nice work, I only just discovered DAB in my car. Is it a meant to be a clearer sound or something?

The original idea was to put M122 rotors in an M112 case, and make a spacer to extend the length of the case, since the M122 rotors are longer. Some Ford guys in the US did this (or at least talked about it) but it's still a lot of stuffing around. Apparently there is a Magnusson MP112HH which has the better rotors (High Helix?) and the internals would be interchangeable, but trying to find these things cheap enough hasn't been easy...

It's a shitload clearer in the cars i've done the retrofits on. Makes regular FM sound like AM in comparison. The other plus is that there are a heap more stations, in Sydney there's something like 50 stations broadcasting in DAB+, and more than half of them are DAB-only, not broadcasting on AM or FM. Plus a lot of the channels are "ad free".

    Thanks Mr Thighblaster.

And fknlol at a 2.9L blower on a 4.2L engine...

Although that brings up another topic, when i went to the RTA on Monday to do the transfer, I noticed on the rego papers it had been registered as a 5.0L, it's definitely not a 5.0L so I asked the nice lady if she would mind changing the engine capacity to 4196cc please, as it had obviously been incorrectly noted when the car was first registered. Anyhoo I got a call from the RTA this morning saying if I get a blueslip and the inspector agrees, then they will change it. But i have to pay for the blueslip. So fuck that...

Just got back today so give me a yell if you need a second set of hands.

DAB buttons on the D4 are still intact as well.

Cheers mate, I'll take you up on that.

Had a bit of a play around this evening with the iPod/Bluetooth. Hooked up a Tune2Air WMA1000 to the iPod cable.

Basically this makes a Bluetooth link to an iPhone or Android device, instead of having to plug it in. You see "ipod" on the touchscreen, but whatever audio is playing on your phone, is played through the cars sound system.

It's pretty good, if you have songs on your phone, is treated as an iPod, but you can also play music via Spotify, IheartRadio, whatever internet radio or streaming service, and if you're watching a video on the phone (eg YouTube) the audio is played over the sound system.

    Pretty cool for old shit.

I'm late to the party but congratulations on a very nice purchase! There is one of these near me that must have a crazy aftermarket exhaust as its quite loud. Sounds sweet.

    Thanks mate

The 5.0L's are really loud, especially the XKR-S which has a straight through centre pipe from the factory, I'm going to get a copy of that design made up for this one, if that's still not making the right noises then I'll be looking at 400 cell cats. Since I had that drama with choked cats on the XJR, I'm a bit suss about the cats on this thing already...

The brakes were the reason I wanted a Portfolio, some of the regular XKR's were also optioned with the Alcons but kind of few & far between in this country.

The production cars got the "cheaper" 1-piece rotors, but the first application with the Alcon's on the Palmersport XKR's had a 2-piece floating rotor.
