My old boss, owner of the largest dealership group in Canberra, had a genuine GTS 186S. He reckoned there were only a couple known to be left 20 years ago.

It's a lot of work but it's a car worth the effort, even from a financially perspective you'd have to try pretty hard to over invest. As long as you don't value your own time too highly

Cheers gents, so much work im being careful not to count my hours. I do enjoy it though, maybe the challenge, hopefully motivation and circumstance stays with me.

Its not the original 186s, its a 186k it is original to a hk just not a gts.

6 cyl gts monaros seem to be out there ive seen a few for sale mostly as survivors though in mint condition that wouldn't see the road.

Splitty might be sold, I had to decide between the two as no man has that much time, I decided i want something i would love driving, the splitty love is there but really its just something cool to look at.

There's two I know of in Canberra and one in Bathurst. (two here are owned by the same family. They also own a couple of other HK monaros to.)

Look forward to the updates man!
Sad to see the Kombi go though

This is obviously assuming all your AUX outputs are doing something. Ie idle control, and the other does water spray, and the other updates your Instagram automatically etc.

Yep its a shame kombi is now sold, funny i thought this would be less work, i was wrong.

The weekend was rained out so lots of time spent in the shed. Lots of unpicking seams, seperating the car from its floor pan.

The previous owner cut along the boot edge for no apparent reason. Will look for a rear cut from a sedan

Then the wagons turn, seperating the wagon from its floor pan.

Just finished both sides last night, still need to unpick places to neaten it up a bit.

Stock up on a couple of products from Oxytech - EasyPhos (spray-on bare metal surface sealant, is weld-through and can be painted over), and Anti-Ox (rust-killer and metal treatment/etcher).

Will let you keep large sections in bare steel while you work on it.

Cheers blasting shouldn't show up much of suprise, it's all pretty out in the open, will be really nice to have it clean!

Is the easyphos good to weld through marv, have you tried it? The dub forum seems to like the upol brand one, apparently some of the brands lack conductivity and can be painful to weld.

Yeah I've used it and my MIG had no issues with going straight through it. Doesn't like being in open weather, though - if you roll your car outside, give it a wipe over with Anti-Ox and a light hit of EasyPhos once you put it back inside.

Plus guys like Tim Johnston from J's Customs, Ryan at United Speed Shop, Aaron at Memphis Hell, etc all use it and swear by it.

Used to think a mate was mad for buying them rundown condition for 20k-25k untill we found out he made a 20k profit on most of the monaro's he rebuilt, sometimes more...most started life as 6cyl gts models which helps.

Loved driving them but got scared to drive & skid last one when it was insured/valuated at 120k being factory v8 gts with weird colour option.

Silver mink & warwick yellow were fave colours on these as a kid.

an easy fix is get a mate to drive in front of you at 60 then 80 then 100 and mark in on your speedo with some liquid paper.

It was a pretty easy decision in the end, it took a few afternoons to unpick, and a few more to unpick the wagon. The wagons floor is not perfect by any means it needs the usual repairs but is structurally perfect.

the monaro floor was bad once i rolled it over on the rotisserie, all of the structures had a couple of tiny little pin holes in them rusting from the inside out, sure i could have patched up the pin holes and pretended i had a good car. This way it will be a good car, not a chance it will rust again.

Nah the old man builds cars for a living, there has been many hours of discussion, i will do all the work but the thought behind it is all consultation.

You've gone full retard on this one mate, i love it ! Can't wait to see your build progress...

My Pop rolled his HG wagon on the way home from work in the mid to late 70's. Bought a HK186S - was yellow with (i'm pretty sure ?) black interior with the payout. I wanted it even then, thought it was the coolest thing ever and used to sit in the carport beside their old rundown house pretending i was driving. I would have been maybe 6 or 7 at the time.

He traded it on a used Galant wagon many years later, as the Monaro wouldn't fit in behind the gate of their new place. Fuck. My. Life.
The older i get, the better i was...
