    Vzj90 prado: shit or not?

    Bonjour gents,

So, as spring approaches i find myself in desperate need of another 4wd.
Due to financial constraints (roughly 6k) im left with few options, but on paper/ google these petrol 3.4 gxl prados seem to be an attractive one. Good power, half decent fuel economy and fairly reliable.

So does anyone know if this is correct or if they are shit heaps?

    Cheers for any help, calum.

our work has a fleet of these old buses and they all seem to be going ok in their high km state.

the dashes rattle heaps and ride is harsh

    they drink fuel

the wheels fall off when you use china replacement ball joints

have seen them do some silly stuff up and down stockpiles on our job sites so seem pretty sure footed

    they just feel dated inside.

I should also say my olds dragged a fairly big caravan with one, apart from the auto getting confused on big hills, it took it like a champ (although they still sold it for a proper landcruiser)

Haha, yeah i had noticed the corolla esque interior, but coming from a gq patrol it will feel ultra modern.
Yeah id go another cruiser if i could afford it. But apparently i have to pay for a wedding...

I had a 98 Prado petrol manual a few years back. It did the job but I never ended up going off road due to having a kid. Used 15-16L per 100 around the city from memory. The only dramas I had in the 3ish years I owned it was an alternator died, the clutch master or slave started leaking internally (I changed them both), and an oil leak at the rear of the engine fried the starter (cunt of a job).

Bought a 105 series not long ago and actually going to take this one bush, even though I just had another kid. Buy a 4wd, have a kid, I see a pattern forming.

Common issues of the top of my head are starter contacts (I was doing a set every week almost, on customers ones), rear shocks can be a cunt to do, as the top mounts are a bitch to get to, without hacking up the inner guard (common!), or lifting the body off the chassis an inch or so. Also check with Toyota that it has the most recent version of lower front balljoints in it. Replaced and re-replaced, AND fitted covers to them many a time. At one stage, we were doing rear axles as well under recall.

On the diesels, the head cracks on the early ones. As for dash rattles, the dash clips into the firewall. If it's been given a rough time, the clips break and the dash rattles. Common solution is to pump some Sikaflex into the slots, and hold the dash in place until it sets. I've seen flex plates crack. Front diff drain and fill plugs are usually flogged out, because people use the wrong-sized hex key in them, or don't give them a belt with a hammer to un-seize them.

They're not a bad unit, overall.

Only ones in my budget are early/ mid 90s ones, and the 3l petrol in them are anus and all the turbo d ones ive seen for sale seem to have cooling system issues and eat water pumps and heads. Could be operator error, but im not keen on finding out.

I had a 3.4 Auto with 300,000 odd km on it. Aside from the horrid fuel economy (18L/100 on the highway, 25L/100 in town and 55L/100 on the sand) which I put down to 33's and carrying a lot of shit all the time. It needed a starter motor after a deep (1m+) water crossing and could have down with replacement of pretty much every suspension and driveline bushing. 450,000-500,000km isn't uncommon for these things given a regular service history.

No. Driving an esky along the footpath will be the end humanity. This must be stopped.

Have an auto one for towing the camper, fuel economy ok on the freeway, around town is bad as stated above. Wouldn't say it has power either, has been reliable though, so far just oil changes and need to do the rocker cover gaskets when I can be bothered
