    Thumbs up RB25/30 Patrol

    Hi there.

Was building another car previously... but needed a 4x4 again for adventures, towing dirtbikes etc. So decided to part with the other project and start a new daily driver build up with the parts money from that. Love the old box shape of a GQ, so picked up a rb30 version about a year ago.

Tyres were rooted so I picked up some 16" steelies with KO2 all terrains.
With this I threw on a Raw4x4 steering damper, King springs and Bilstein shocks to raise it up a couple of inches. Also have some air assist airbags for the rear when I tow the trailer of dirtbikes around. No wheel alignment and it runs straight with no wobbles.

That brings me to now. Where I go riding there are plenty of hills on the way there... the old carby RB doesn't like the hills with a trailer on that's for sure. So decided I'd just do the build sooner rather than later.

Have a 6boost manifold being built now, and about 30 parcels to open up tomorrow.

    Cheers,
    Daynesy

This will be fucking retarded, in the best possible way
I wouldn't recommend sex, drugs or insanity for everyone, but they've always worked for me...

just to play devils advocate here, why not go for a bigger engine? it seems you'll be asking a lot of an rb engine to lug 3-4 tonnes around? sure it'll do it, but an ls of some description, (or even a barra if you were so inclined.) would probably do it easier? manual box is pretty small for the application too.

    Should be good.

It's an R33 VCT NA head. Was considering an 80 series as the other project car was a 2jz, so was going to throw that in but like the GQ and already has the motor.

People with the RB25 in the GQ/GU say they have plenty of grunt, actually quite quick... just lacking a little down low. GQ comes standard with RB30 so no custom mounting etc. Engineering for a turbo is easier. I think the combo should work well but i'll be sure to update when the time comes

I'd have kept the RB30 bottom end and stuck the 25 head on.

Lol, yeah didn't click when I read the title, I've seen RB25 into Patrols before but not a a 25/30.
Throwing boost down it's neck should go some way to fixing the lack of grunt. I'm still amazed Nissan thought sticking that engine in a Patrol was a good idea, more so that some people converted them to LPG.

E85 and some timing will give it the low down torque it needs, otherwise just clutch it into boost and rooster tail like a boss.

Too hard to get E85 in Perf.

This looks good. Turbo will remove the lack of torque issue your worried about.

Yeah seen that video... he sure likes mashing limiter doesn't he!

Turbo and head will be a vast improvement over the dirty carby 30 with about 3hp.

Yeah parting with the tonner unfortunately... but it was the smart thing to do.

E85 for a semi touring 4x4 probably not the best idea haha... if only it were widespread.

Some more shit for the pile.

Water/meth injection perhaps instead of E85?

I'm probably not the best guy to take water injection tips from though.

Mmmm don't think it'll be needed for what I do... more shit to worry about. Gotta keep it 4B ish.

Got the head off, strip it down for a clean up. Need an RB30 now to start on the bottom end.

Head pretty well apart... do some mods and get it cleaned. Head is nice and straight so no decking.

New RB30... All looked decent but pretty sure conrod #6 is bent... hopefully that is the only problem though... might rip it down tomorrow for some inspections.

Valves before and after a clean up... ready to go in soon.

Nice progress! I'm building one soon with my 25de head. Will be watching your build closely.

Are you doing any oiling system mods?

Have only enlarged the return holes and main return galleries to head gasket size, then cleaned up inside the head. Restrictors and VCT delete also. Should suffice for what it's used for (street and beach bashing)!

Where'd you pickup the restrictors from?

Ah on ebay... only line 20 bucks and couldnt be bothered knocking some up.

Been busy working so nothing done. But I did knock up a new wiring pinout, RB25/30 to Link G4+ Xtreme which will be running this combo.
Hopefully it all works... should do!

Only have 7 weeks to finish it before a camp trip... fingers crossed -_-.

Had a few things halt me as you do... but some stuff has happened at least.

#6 rod was indeed bent as suspected. Found some pistons and rods though so I replaced with one of those.

Modded the head for internal oil feed to solenoid.

Been cleaning stuff up and giving it a lick of paint. Quite like this colour, looks nice in person.

Head back together pretty much... few bits and pieces to do on that side which was going to wait until bottom end was back together. Bosch 1000cc injectors I brought over from other project are too long I have now found out. So I ended up ordering some Siemens 650cc short injectors instead. Awaiting their arrival.

Modded bits and pieces on the block for the 25 head to fit. Anyway it's now in the living room for building!

ACL bearings and ARP studs in place.

Crank with new Tomei collar fitted in place. Whole bottom end has been balanced. But we have a problem in this shot.........

Here it is... the 3 longer studs are too long... build is now on hold awaiting feedback and parts .

Lastly, the rear end of the Holset turbo is a 2.75" exit with a weird v-band flange. Seems near impossible to get something to match up that can be easily welded to some exhaust pipe. So a mate with access to a lathe knocked one up for me!

That's probably it for now until I get over the main stud hurdle.
