    VW Amarok.

Donít expect much to happen in this thread but wanted a place to store some links etc. I couldnít bring myself to pay mid 20ís for a 300,000klm old Hilux so I broke my no VW branded products rule and bought this. Road manours are great for a Ute and because itís the ďUltimateĒ spec itís well enough apointed.
I wouldnít say itís a hoot to drive but itís a nice enough place to be.

Ute is a completely stock 2012 2ltr turbo diesel. Intended usage is 90% road 10% dirt road camping. So no big lift, wank tyres and side awning more hot side intake pipe and a tune by Dale. Iíve read very mixed reports on idrive throttle controllers so probably wonít bother with one. Also not sure I can be fucked fitting a snorkel even though there are reports of them picking up a little more power with one.

This is itís best attribute so far.

Great thing. a lot of amaork haters but it seems no one that's actually owned one seems to hate them.

A mate of mine who owns a hilux asked for a drive yesterday as he is looking for somthing newer than his 06. He has the same usage demands as me. Anyway he came back saying he is buying one.

They are very comfy on and off-road. Also quite capable with big tyres.
I did manage to get the temp warning to come on for a few seconds on a couple of hills coming back from Racewars on Monday.

Was towing a broken Golf on a car trailer in 36C heat, say 850kg trailer and 1550kg so 2.4T
He has had to wait for it to cool when bogged on the beach a couple of times. Supposedly they need a bigger intercooler. This has a stock tune. Had a tune before but was removed to allow the broken auto box to be replaced under warranty.

There were issues with them randomly boiling, but I'm not sure what causes it. The couple I saw close up, were driven until they seized. Fuck knows why you'd ignore 3 different levels of visual and audible warning.

Also, look into getting the updated lower timing belt cover fitted if it doesn't already have it. This generation of the 2L TDI motors have a habit of eating the drive belt, and feeding it under the cover into the timing belt.

Other than that, they'd have to be the most car-like of utes in their class.

Couple of mates sold their hiluxes and bought them. Nicer to ride in and feel more car like.

Disappointed in the Pepperjack. So many better options.

    $15per bottle so, you know.

Its going in for a new timing belt and full service on Wednesday. Will check if the lower cover has been updated.

The first warning sign is that it turns off the a/c compressor.
Should have pulled the water/metho injection pump out of the car on the trailer and plumbed it into the tow ute.

Egg cooler fails. Allows hot exhaust gas into the coolant. It pockets in the head and boils it. Check the egr pipe joints for black goop. Goop = fucked. Also check the aux belt tensioner. They fail and allow the aux belt to get dragged into the cambelt. There is a robust kit that works better but the tensioner is still an issue. Diff pinion seals also go and are a bit shit. Discs and pads are a 60k consumable

How are the rear seats for carlikeness? Most dual cab utes I've been in seem to have the seat back at about an 87 degree angle from the base.

when are you starting the toureg v10tdi conversion?

I picked up one the same as this from VAG the other day.
Check out the camping setup. The timber tub cover is a tad different. Also has a rooftop tent.

A mate has one, reckons the mirrors snap off if you look at them funny.
He's had the back axle replaced under insurance after his missus belted the bottom of the diff on a rock and it dumped the oil and seized... Cost his insurance some rediculous amount.
"Where can we get hold of a Vincent Black Shadow?" "Whats that?" "A fantastic bike," I said. We've got a 2015 Trendline.
Was an ex factory demo we bought from original owner, so has just about everything on it except the Bi xenon lights and Sat Nav.
Leather seats are good, as is tub liner, central locking canopy towbar, sidesteps, toureg style twin stainless exhaust. 20 inch mags are a bit much, but it looks good.

Fitted a nudge bar to add driving lights as the factory units are absolute crap. Have blocked off the parking sensors so it does not go off all the time. Also fitted a kenwood DAB dual din stereo. Has apple and android connections with a fitted reverse camera.

Very comfy and costs the same to fill as the V8 ute on premium, but goes 600k further.

    Cheers.

I asked my usually helpful local dealer and former employer, and got nowhere.

Good to read that these things are pretty normal cars considering the other VW horror stories out there.

Proper slushbox auto 8 speed, not DSG. Probably diesel gate , but who gives a fuck.

Had the service done by a reputable inderpendent VW/Audi/Porsche specialist yesterday. I dropped it off at 0900 and it was ready to pick up at 1300.
He did the belt kit along with tentioner and updated the cover. Aside from just a service I asked for new rotors and pads as well as going over the whole thing to see if there was anything else coming up.
Nothing really needs doing but he did adjust the shift linkage and replaced an indercator globe that was a little sus.
I had made a mental note to ask him about the shifter as it felt a little of to me but completely forgot about it so I was pretty happy he had driven the car and did it anyway.

Total cost for parts and labour was $1500. I know I could of done it for less myself but my time is better spent in other places.

That's not a bad price at all.

$1200-$1300 is a pretty standard price for just doing the timing belt kit/water pump alone.

What torque? Seems a little on the low side and I don't recall Dale's dyno being a heatbreaker like Scotts.

Hope the DPF&EGR catastrophically failed and fell out at the same time.
