    Sandown Hysterics

So - finally back in my car after 2 and a bit years.

Qualified P2 and finished all 3 races in P1 so pretty chuffed.

Surprised at how much race-fitness I'd lost .... even by the end of Sunday I was still over-braking the car and re-accelerating up to the corner.

Props to Rob Palermo (RP Motorsport Developments) for his work redesigning the front suspension to make it Bailey-proof

Enjoy the picsClick image for larger version.

Last weekend was MG and Invited British.

I turned 65 last week and in the 2 years I have been out of the car I have lost at least a second or more.

I found I was over braking - or over-thinking my brake markers by 50 metres and more and whilst I carved 2 seconds out of my quali-time from Saturday morning to Sunday arvo, there is at least another 15 tenths to come because I've turned into a bloody wuss ...

By the same token, SWMBO was pretty clear about the consequences of an enfuckeration to the car or my person so I had the "domestic driver-coach" in the back of my mind for pretty much the whole weekend.

There are some video's floating around as well, but I was so out of race-weekend prep that I forgot my Gopro .... so none from my car unfortunately.

I remember seeing you battling it out with the McDowalls (spell check) 30 odd years ago when I used to go to all the race meets with my dad.

Was around when you first debuted the car from memory

Car debuted in early 1989. Big dose of steroids and diet in 1990 and that's when is really started to get expensive !!

Yep, raced against Neil McDowell, Andy and Junior (Simon), as well as Paul Trevethan and later Dr Mort ..... in those days there was no breathalyzer on Sunday morning so some epic sessions on Sat nite ... not any more - just as well 'cos I'm now well over the hill in that department.

Car is completely over developed but isn't that what you do !!

Rover V8 with TRS (TA Performance) heads and Jenvey downdraft injection, 14:1 on E85. Bulge on bonnet is a "mistake" - at least 75mm too high. Airbox top is 15mm above height at rear of bonnet and needs to be flat to front of air-box rather than 75mm above ....

Have new bonnet ready to chop up and make nicer ............

Nope, rookie error ...... compression lock as consequence of too much rear bias and no more bias adjustment to move to the front. Replaced rear calipers (originals from 1992) and slight (1.5mm) increase in piston diameter exposed the rear m/cyl bore balance. Thought I could drive out of it but with more than an armful of lock I though I should just centre the steering, lock it up and give Phil a half-chance of avoiding me - which thankfully he did.

Pretty happy with the one-day and got close to 17's .............

Only been out twice in the last 3 years and brake balance aside, I need more seat time. The balance issue is an easy fix - I have a selection of master cyl's in the shed.

Bigger issue was throttle jammed open on downshift to 5th at the top of the back straight ............ now that really got my attention. ECU held revs at 7500 as I threw the clutch and gave the throttle pedal a bang and it unstuck, but the flat spot was the size of my hand and thru to the kevlar belts ..... apparent the smoke haze resulted in calls to the fire brigade because of bushfire fears !!! Lucky to get out of it for the cost of a tyre .. could well have finished in the fence. ANyway the airbox will be off later tonight as that is a problem that needs to be found and fixed before I go out again.

Anyway ...... "The older I get, the faster I was" is the quote now
