    Life after 40....what car?

    So, looking like my 40 is going in the next week or so, assuming deposit comes through. Which means what do I go for now in my life after 40?

    Need/want to put a fair bit of coin back into mortgage. Also don't have the time now to build or fully rebuild a car either. I've had a full race car with rego, and to be honest it's not enjoyable driving on the road slowly. But it was an absolute weapon on the track, which is exactly how how planned and built it.

    So now I need a car that is/can be not scared of a race track, yet still civilised enough to enjoy on the road a bit. But it won't be a daily. More an occassional weekender and hillclimb/circuit sprinter.

    Also ideally want a car that is close to the bottom of the depreciation curve, so that rules out new cars.

    Options I can come up with are:

    1) Lotus Exige/Elise - keen as on one of these but expensive to buy. 40 -60k, so not saving much money here. Cheap to run I assume but I worry about hurting the chassis one day and how to fix it. I know first hand how well these go having competed against them many times. 900 kg and toyota mechanicals appeals to me. Driven those motors in celicas and corrolas. Very nice, just needed a supercharger and less weight, like a Lotus!

    2) FD RX-7. These are not going to get cheaper I think. Series 8 around 2000 for about 30k? I've driven a mates one 10 years ago and it was just 'right'. Still look amazing, don't think they've been beaten for an all round package yet. Suspension and brakes very good and just need tweaking. Only problem is that I had an old 82 RX-7 turbo that modified and competed with for 10 years before the 40. So I know how to rebuild a rotary... But not sure I want to go back there. No, don't want to LS one either. I've got an LS daily already thanks. I'd love a 20B in one just for the sound, but that aint cheap, and a 13B on E85 with EFR turbo makes 400 RWHP easy nowadays.

    3) BMW 135 N54 twin turbo manual. Only discovered how cheap these were last night poking around on carsales. 400 RWHP with a couple of tweaks and bolt ons. Big brakes and great chassis standard. Bit fat at 1450 kg, and more luxury rather than sports, but for 20k for a stocker through to 30k for fully modified they make a compelling argument. Again, I've competed against these and similar 3 series with same driveline (same car underneath) and I know how fast they go. But they don't sound very exciting. Also worry about fixup costs if something goes bang.

    4) Porsche Cayman S. I looked a these a while back. With a turbo kit they are giant killers. But $50k starting before mods is a bit much. And then the IMS may go bang.

    Left field is old corvette/mustang/camaro. 60's model. But don't think I have the time and all will end up over 60k.

    Help me waste my money. Assuming it comes through...

    The porsche is good for road and track, but whatever you do, don't drive the 981 Cayman because it's so much better than the later model

    Yeah, great, but the idea is to save some money. In other words, to put back into the mortgage money I've already spent!

    Forgot to add to the list as my cheapie option:

    NB MX5 turbo. Have driven a stock one and was dull. But I know they have all the aftermarket support for suspension and brakes etc to make them good in theory. But is 300 RWHP out of a turboed 1.8L reasonable expectation? I'm guessing it should do it easy with a rod/piston rebuild. Lightyear help? I really need to find one that has been done already to see if I like it, cause I hated the stocker NA and NB's I've driven. But 5-7k to purchase a clean one, then that leaves me 15k on mods to make it sort of useful and all under 20k.

    Oh, I need RWD also. And manual trans.
