if you are going to tow with it and go auto I'd defiantly be pushing to get the most cylinders and displacement in there that you can possibly fit

yup, I'm aiming for similar towing performace to my 3rz hilux which i found sufficient for what I tow. Bigger is always nicer though!

Hey! Sorry I didn't message back!

Been collecting for 30 years - I only have 2 auto columns, and one of those is in my 1UZ wagon.

Use a cable to join the column to what ever auto trans you end up using. Pretty easy to suss out. Trying to think of Toyotas with column autos. Might be worth while trying to track down a later model crown one

A very early (late 67/early 68) 50 series column is supposed to fit BUT I have never done it. I also remembered I bought a whole car just for the auto column, so that makes 3.

I think I might have mentioned to you on FB to just use a Lokar cable kit and modify it a little. If you use an A340, the selector switch has a series of outputs for the gear you're in - would be very simple to wire up a Dakota Digital gear selector light panel. Here's what I mean - there are retro ones which would fit with the look of the car and would be a piece of piss to fit to the dash.

If you were very creative and had a lot of patience, it would be possible to graft this on to the honey pot. You'd have to get a pointer and mount, and link it to the column shift with some fine steel braided wire at the right sort of ratio. All doable but a proper fuckton of detail.

awesome andrew, I'll have a look into that - one problem I may have when using the manual lever to control the auto is not having a lockout function so i dont knock the lever into reverse while driving around.....I guess it's not then biggest problem I have so I'll figure something out when I get to that step

beams would be nice but too dear and no torque for towing

I've also seen a japanese dude put a spacia van 3SFE into his one too but same problem - gutless....

    Very cool.

My vote is a 2TRFE. Just add a 3076 if you want to fry tyres later.

So I work for one of the biggest automotive wholesalers in the country and do you think I can find any tie rods for this thing?.....of course not! I did find a replacement for the short outer tie rod but the inner and also the idler arm/pitman arm are going to be IMPOSSIBLE.... It's looking more and more like I need a rack conversion..........which means daewoo/camira parts on my car

It's only a Camry motor. Should be free.

Just find some dumbarse with a whole car, that's snapped the timing belt.

More cubes the better here if towing is the plan. 5VZ, Moo, LS all worthy options. Rack conversion certainly transformed mine. Used a VN Commode power rack. Bit of bump steer but fuck looking for unicorn shit parts.

BEAMS is a lovely motor but not really a tow motor. There is some peculiarity with the sump such that the earlier, easily modifiable 2S sump doesn't work. Suddenly that big bulky two part front sump is right where the chassis is. Also, the S-W5x isn't a direct bolt up proposition - some of the holes line up, others do not so you're resigned to using the 5 speed auto or the 6 speed box. Earlier generation 3S motors do not have this problem (all the 2S stuff just bolts up and works) but ultimately you still have a twitchy 2 litre motor. Even all the fuck around with a 5S bottom end only stretches you out to 2.2 litres.

So whats wrong with the 2Trfe suggestion? 2.7, adequate torque, modern and common so good chance wrecker motors are good, proven strength, relatively compact.

Most of the conversions I've seen put a bush in the bottom of the steering column outer tube at the firewall.
"Where can we get hold of a Vincent Black Shadow?" "Whats that?" "A fantastic bike," I said. "The new model is something like two thousand cubic inches, developing two hundred brake-horsepower at four thousand revolutions per minute on a magnesium frame with two styrofoam seats and a total curb weight of exactly two hundred pounds."
