HSV VT Series 1 GTS - 350ci of thongs with a spanish transmission

I am in the process of buying a replacement for my 2004 VY Calais, and I figured that the time was right to finally get the car that I've wanted since their initial release back when I was but a young lad. I remember going to the Motor Show when it was in town, and one of the first cars I clapped eyes on was a silver VT Clubsport, instantly fell in love with the shape and have always smiled when I see one out on the road even today.

At the VT initial release, the pinnacle of the range as far as performance was concerned was the GTS, with the Harrop-stroked 5.7L Holden V8, which had a Harrop stroker crank pushing capacity from 304ci to 350ci, factory A9L rods with dished pistons, larger injectors (265cc, standard 5L was 207cc), with standard comp ratio of 8.55:1 - good for 220kW and 475nm of torque.

Browsing Facebook the other night, I stumbled upon a very neat example which has had a little maintenance work done to it to keep it in very good condition - painted a few things including the front bar (to repair stone chips apparently), replacement carpets, rebuild of the drivers seat foam, few leather items retrimmed inside using the same methods used when first done... it really is a nice streeter, and pretty much completely unmolested. Driveline is stock, and the car was not optioned with the automatic slushbox thank god, instead it kept the BorgWarner T56 cog swapper. It unfortunately also wasn't optioned with the Harrop brake package, but that isn't hard to change. Likewise, it did not get leather seats, sunroof, or the premium sound system.

The car is off for a workshop inspection later this week at APS in Frankston, fingers crossed it comes back with an excellent report. Once I have the report and money has swapped hands, shipping from Vic to WA will be organised and all things going well, the car should be here late next week.

Plans are to keep it relatively standard; I just want a nice, neat cruiser, something a little rarer, and something the the unmistakable burble of the old 5L-based V8. Only planned modifications are tint, bluetooth radio, and maybe a replacement cat-back (keep the original in the shed).

Here are a couple of the photos sent to me by the seller - it doesn't come on the 20" MOMO's, instead it comes on the standard 18" factory fitted wheels.

Used to like these in white particularly the top of the range 220i Senators..GTS was not far behind then they were quickly over-shadowed by later ls engine vt.

Picked up a vt ss 5 litre when it was less than 12 months old as value of them nose-dived like a motherfucker.
an easy fix is get a mate to drive in front of you at 60 then 80 then 100 and mark in on your speedo with some liquid paper.

Starr manifold and throttlebody, headers and full exhaust. Will make a solid 300rwhp and look standard under the bonnet.
Manual will be fun, one thing I always disliked about my VS GTS was the auto.

Its a shame the 20s aren't included as they do look good on it, though the standard 18s don't look too bad on it either.

Did think of a Starr manifold/TB, but for the price it's not something I will bother with, not looking to chase numbers with this car - if I were, I'd have looked for something LS-based.

Nice car. Will no doubt be a better investment than the LS powered cars amongst Holden fans.

This is obviously assuming all your AUX outputs are doing something. Ie idle control, and the other does water spray, and the other updates your Instagram automatically etc.

Nice! Agreed, the Holden motors have a much better sound to them.

I remember working on these as a first year apprentice in Holden pre-delivery. One day they had me park 2x GTS side by side and swap the cloth and leather interiors between the 2 cars. Brand new cars, all seats and door trims!

I do have to admit, the trade-off between power and noise compared to the Calais will be perfectly fine in my mind!

Still no word yet from the seller regarding the inspection, but then it is only Tuesday and it was meant to be some time this week.

An hour? Is that all? Took me weeks to find the right car, this popped up and has been for sale for a few months but not really publicly advertised, so think I got a goodie. Seller seems really genuine which is a bonus.

Pre-purchase inspection went well, few extra things picked up which aided in lowering the purchase price a little - the decision has been made that once the car is here, motor and box out, strip it down and replace all the gaskets, hoses, and few other things, give the car a real birthday.

Money was sent tonight, shipping booked, ETA is 14th of fucking February, ages away. Gives me time to acquire goodies...

Last pic before it gets picked up (had to edit out his other toys in grey)

It looked good with the stars, but the standard rims look fucking fantastic. One of the best looking Holden/HSV rims.

Gotta say I don't mind how it sits on the original wheels either. Nice purchase!

VE GTS is a better buy IMO.
.... because every driver experiences the destructive potential of the effortless surge of power available through the smallest of body movements.
