    Roof top tents

Probably going to get one soon as the 25 year old dome tent has seen better days. Want a roof topper to be off the ground and free up space inside the car. Will be two people for the next 18 months, then two adults and two kids, so I'd like to fit all four in it. Most likely two on roof and two in the annex on cots.

    Looking at:

    - ARB Simpson III
    - Darche Panorama 2
    - Howling Moon tourer (Exxy)

    Anyone got experience, or recommendations?

Bought one of these 5 years ago. Top quality. Has held up in hectic conditions. Good service.
    5/7 would camp again.

Do you find it annoying not being able to move the car and go for a drive once set up. We have a camper trailer and seem to use the car every now and then for stuff when out camping. Have been considering getting a roof topper for when it is just the mrs and I going out without the kids but keep on thinking that a good quality double swag would be better.

Yeah, that's why we've never got one. If you're the kind of camper that just sets up for a few days and doesn't drive anywhere they look great, but I would find it a massive pain the arse to pack up every time you want to drive somewhere. It probably depends on the type of camping you're going to do, but I'd rather throw a big tent on the roof and deal with getting it on and off.

What vehicle is it going on? 4 people is a lot to have on roof racks. And how old are the kids? Off the ground is good until a kid needs to climb/fall out in the dark for a piss.

What about a small rooftop tent for two you can pack up easily, then a large tent for the ground?

Rockhopper: How well does it seal? I go everywhere from Nth Qld to Alpine region. That's why I'm prepared to fork out a bit for a quality one.

I do touring stuff so moving every day. Going on a Landcruiser (105 series). Kids are 5, and 5 months. Baby won't be coming for a while.

Just watched that video on the couple that got rid of their roof top tent. I did look at the pop tops and especially James Baroud tents. Perfect for what they're doing but, I won't get one because:

    - Price
    - It takes up the whole roof
    - Only fits two people so when my whole family comes I'd need a second tent anyway
    - If you're getting eaten by mozzies you can live/cook/sit in the annex of the fold out

EDIT: Just seen above post. just buy a 4wd supacentre one like everyone else?

Gumtree "James Baroud" (australia wide) and keep an eye on them. You will sometime see them at a decent price.

The fuck do you do when you need to get firewood, pick someone up, some cunt axes himself somehow and need to get to a town/doc/ranger/cocky/kiosk, or if you need to jet down to the barge/town for ice/milk etc. Good quality tent, some stretchers if adamant about being off the ground imo.

im holding off buying another tent until someone makes a proper high quality canvas gazebo dome tent thing. They’re out now, like an igloo/greenhouse hanging from the 3m side of a gazebo, but they’re all fucked quality cheap shit.

Did some research and going to order the same as Rockhopper's. Apparently they're very close (if not the same) as the ARB one, but $1k less.

My dad is the kind to research the shit out of everything and he has a James Baroud. For when he does his Simpson trips etc. But yeah, it's just him sleeping in it.

The James Baroud's are the ducks nuts. You can even mount spare tyres, solar panels, max trax, etc to the tops of them. If it was two people I'd get one, maybe, they are 4k.

Using a rooftop tent is only good for certain people and certain situations.

The main reason it works for me, is I camp for 2-3 days right where we are doing our activities. If we are kayaking, and fishing an inlet, we camp alongside. If I go shark fishing, we set up at the beach 30-50mts back, and fish solidly for a few days with rods infront of the roof top tent.

Fire wood - we either bring in, or there's plenty in walking distance to find. The same goes with milk bread etc. If you go camping, and need to keep ducking out for shit, then your not very well prepared. Waeco is filled with all the milk, meat, beer etc. A big camping box with utensils, cookware and dry food, bait in esky on ice, solar panel etc. Normally I carefully study weather conditions, pick a spot thats going to work in those conditions, load everything I need and off I go. I like the fact that after 3-4 days, I have had no need for anything from the mainstream world, I am completely self sufficient, I dont see a soul generally, and am able to not have to worry about driving here or there, because everything is at my doorstep at the place I have picked. If you look at most of my photos, you will see what I mean.

Thats why a rooftop works for me. If your with a family, and are planning on doing daytrips etc, this would'nt be a good choice.

Rockhopper is all over this haha

I have had my Hannibal on the F250 for 12 yrs. Tent is still like new, but cover bag wears out ,on my 3rd now although the they seem to bit more uv rated now.
It's handy to pull up , be set up in 10 min. But it's a pain if you need to go again

Seen a few people doing the family thing in them , most seem to cope alright.

Remember you get what you pay for, china doesn't make stuff to last but for you to buy again soon
Mine is proper canvas ,never leaks. . Others are a fly nylon type of tent

I've ordered a Sahara. If I did want to camp in one spot and move around I've still got my old tent. I can take the Sahara off and use that.

So who's coming to the cape next year?

every second ute up here is wearing a roof top tent. Everyone wants to do the cape, no one wants to get eaten by crocs. Not being eaten by crocs trumps all the other considerations IMHO

Had an ebay one for 7 years, spent many months in it and its still going strong. Cape x3, Gulf, Simpson x 2, High Country x 2, etc. Very quick and easy and holds all bedding etc so the car only has food, clothes and cooking stuff in it. Was at Inskip Sunday night and there were 80kmh winds til 4am and tent was fine as usual, they are really solid. They have a huge amount of room inside too.

    Soft cock.

When do you want to do cape, Blow? I'm stuck for around school holidays now. I was going to take the kid out a week early to try and avoid the enormous crowd.

Probably not until next year actually, won't have the holiday hours built up enough to do it this year.

School holidays is the worst time to go I've heard, way to many people on the tracks.
