Thanks! I'm putting it down to the youtube algorithm and weather (it's getting cold in the USA and Mother Russia) more than my fabrication (as demonstrated by the 1:2 dislike to like ratio) or editing skills. The thumbnail may have helped too.

really need to upload more, could do some videos with no power tools but it would just be me yelling at my kids not to touch things.

New video up, put in a little bit of controversial content (gotta give them something to complain about) and spent a bit of time on the thumbnail and mild clickbaity title.

I worked out that virtualdub does something funny to the output .AVIs so they look grey and washed out, i had noticed it before but didn't put much effort into correcting it as I couldn't be bothered writing down all of the video filter settings. Turns out it is easy to save all of the settings and load them when virtualdub crashes and you have to re-open it. got the footage looking better, possibly a bit dark but it looks OK on phone which is what most people watch my videos on.

Did a fair bit of reading on LOG video format (not really applicable to my 600D) and Rec709 and colour grading and blah blah, kinda interesting. I'm closer to a consistent look and feel for my videos now.

Also one kid has started school and the other is going to kinder two days a week, so I have a tiny bit of powertool time.

YouTube really seems to be pushing the regular releases/splitting long videos up into shorter videos angle lately.

oh yeah the merge collector video is picking up views a fair bit, it's funny how a video can be up for so long before getting much interest, I've always imagined that you upload a video, everyone who is going to watch it watches it and then nobody watches it. I suppose new people are being made every day and changing interests or hobbies or whatever.

Interesting to hear from some YT-ers that YT has tightened their belt on revenue pay-outs.

mine's been up (have had a big spike once a month for the last three months) and down lately, but mainly down and hovering at "beer money" Haven't done a comparison on revenue per watch-time to see exactly what is happening.

On the topic of stats I was going to respond to Marty!'s comment about teenagers not watching MCM but figured here is a better place to do it than clogging up the MCM thread.

Different subject material but my audience is middle aged on average and ~90% male, one of the odder statistics is that ~90% of views/watchtime are on mobile phones, and ~90% of those are on android devices. This doesn't really reflect the market share of android vs. fruit phones so I guess iphone users are less likely to be DIYers and/or poor people.

I watched your merge collector video recently. I was already subbed to your channel but it popped up in the home list on my phone app. I had been watching similar videos though.

you mean you didn't click the bell? yeah notifications have been buggered for ages, my latest video has been up 10 days and has 590 views, my channel has ~8300 subscribers. on the upside 5 people unsubbed when they watched it so maybe that's a good thing.

Maybe it's just the way I use youtube, i'm always looking for new stuff to watch and checking my subscription list.

Cheers for the sub, i'm glad that video has been picking up views, I haven't seen another one that goes into that level of detail.

And just short of 5 months later this video has now hit two million views, thought it would take another week or so but it just got a surge of interest (as it seems to every month) Should hit 10K subs before too long, need to make myself a wooden play button.

Lots of build oriented youtubers have been splitting projects into episodes recently but I don't think I'll do that unless it seems appropriate. Will hopefully get a chance to do some stuff in the school holidays. More welding and maybe some aluminium casting.

It's a pity the double ads that seem to be on everything I watch doesn't translate into double the revenue for me, but youtube gunna youtube I guess.

what are your ad settings? Are you ticking the extra box for 'unskippable ads' or whatever? I just left my settings at default, there seems to be one box left unticked, I think it was that one...

I had a big surge in numbers recently, nothing like 1M views that you got though... my last podcast seemed to be on a popular topic (Younger Dryas cosmic impact theory) and it got ~40K views in a week or there abouts. Translated to roughly $300 or so in ad revenue on default settings. I have to imagine 1M views is worth a lot more. It's nice and all but I get more from straight paypal donations thanks to e-begging, mostly due to a few generous people that seem to like the shit i dribble. Haven't played with any of the advertising settings on youtube but interested in any pointers that you have...

I left the ad settings on default, i'm kinda paranoid about forcing more than usual ads on people, my channel got a big drop in views after it was monetized which is probably pretty normal. I think these days people are getting used to youtube ads, though the back to back ones tat he start are a bit rude IMHO.

I think yours is doing better per view because of watch time (although I only got one ad at the start) and (I assume) most of your audience speaks English, my Russian/Mexican viewers must use ad block or not watch ads because very little revenue comes from them while many of the views do.

If I can get an upload rythm going I might open a patreon or something.

My main advice is "be lucky", it's probably stating the obvious but you need to make content people want to watch and then make sure they can find it. your keywords look fine, who knows why people like certain thumbnails.

I kinda wonder if my channel would do better if I added V-logging but it would probably lose me subs too, and I don't really want to do it anyway. Next vid will involve welding and fire, will see if I can imitate my own success. I actually want to build and have the thing now, so that should help.

oh and thanks to the user on this page who subscribed the other day, i'd name and shame you but you might not want your cover blown

    cool, thanks.

yeah the podcast was around an hour long, definitely only works for english speakers. I've been trying to make shorter content, I'm not sure it really matters, as long as it's on topic. I have no idea how length impacts google's magical youtube money algo's, I don't know if people get periodic ads on my shit or not.

I share your opinion on the advertising, also why I left mine on default.

As I understand it (which I clearly don't or I would be making more money) a video over 10 minutes has a chance of getting two ads but a video under doesn't, at some stage that was the case anyway, if a video is close to 10 minutes I will edit so it ends up being a bit longer, if it looks like it will be a lot longer i'll try to cut it down to a bit more than 10 minutes, short of padding or cutting out actual content.

As I mentioned earlier a number of youtubers are splitting their long content up into parts as apparently the algorithm favors shorter videos, one youtuber used to post build videos that were about an hour and a half long, he's taken to splitting them up into 3 or 4 parts releasing one part a week with the full video available via patreon. It could be working for him, heaps of comments are saying they preferred the long video on youtube but what really matters is if the silent majority of his fanbase is happy and he is making money and his subs are going up.

I think there is definitely a place for long-form content, and if that is what you are doing then just go with it. No harm in uploading short videos too, but personally I would plan it to be short right from the start as opposed to just uploading snippets from longer podcasts for example.

It's getting into clickbait territory but reaction videos still seem to do well, you could consider doing a (short) reaction/review of Hancock's TEDx talk that they labelled
NOTE from TED: Please be aware that this talk contains outdated and counterfactual assertions, and should not be understood as a representation of modern scholarship on ancient civilizations.

Put up an hour long episode today, and a 15 min one last week, both doing fine. It’s all about the content itself, take focus off algorithms and thumbnails and all that stuff and make it interesting enough that people will reccomend it to others. That will also tick the youtube bot box of people having good engagement, write back to comments and then move on to the next thing. If your production value is that little bit better than the next guy then they’ll come back.

He's certainly getting his dose of vindication. I kinda sorta know Graham, we correspond over email occassionally and am working on getting a sit down interview with him. We'll see if it pans out, he's pretty busy promoting his new book right now. I have a cut together commentary of the rogan podcast he did with Randall Carlson and Michael Shermer (skeptic) who got more or less destroyed. I wanted to highlight just how many logical fallacies shermer used in his arguments against what Hancock and Carlson were putting forward. Never really finished it.

My version of 'shorter' content is 15-20 minutes. I try to not care about it so much for podcasts and that type of thing, they're all longer format.

    Thanks for the pointers!
