    If you really want to get into the performance game you are going to need to prove your engine can hold together, either with racing or dyno comps, but I'm pretty sure C.O.M.E Racing tried this with there stroker kits and didn't have much success when he came to selling them.
    You really need to prove you know what your doing, by showing people but just telling them.

    For example, "Mechanics Canberra" will probably have 5000 hits a week and every other workshop is chasing that without success or big spend. "Weird french shitbox repair Canberra" might only have 200 hits a week but currently is going nowhere. Start doing some advertising around weird french shitbox repair and all of a sudden you are the first port of call for all 200 of those weird french shitbox owning knobs. 100% of 200 leads a week in an uncontested market is shitloads better than fuckall percent of 5000 hits a week in a market saturated by a hundred shops that have bigger budgets, more staff and experience.

    A mate of mine runs the website for an extremely popular exhaust manufacture and they spend about 95% of their budget on Google adwords, he swears by it.

    Get a semi decent website and allocate a couple of hundred (or 100, or whatever) to adwords and you should see significant return.

    Someone mentioned odd French cars earlier - not sure how many there are in Canberra but that might be an option. I've only worked on one saab, late model 9-3 turbo but I remember actually being pretty impressed with how it drove and how it was to work on - definitely no worse than the opel shitboxes I was used to working on.

    A lot of mechanics shy away from them because of their reputation but I think that's exactly what you want to look for - what's better from a mechanics point of view than a car that's not too bad to work on but is constantly shitting itself and needing work?

    I work on french cars quite often I've done an engine swap from a 407 to a 607 before it's easier than most think. There are more french cars here than probably any other city as we have weird public servants that drive weird cars. But there is also a lot of places that fix french cars here.

    The french car thing was a piss take example, not a business direction recommendation. I really shouldn't have to explain that should I?

    My point was find an area of your trade or business that is under serviced, position yourself as an expert and cater to that need better than anyone else, charge appropriately.

    I'd also recommend doing as much personal and business development learning courses as you can handle or afford. Surrounding yourself with likeminded motivated business owners will do far more for you than a bunch of negative whiny cunts on an internet forum. Like attracts like so if you want a successful business go find some guys who are doing that and learn from them.

    Nobody has their act together in Canberra advertising Citroen repairs. There is a mob called ACDC with a horrible website at no. 2 and Roverworks at no. 4.

    It's even more dire for French cars. About the first link worth clicking is a place in Brisbane.

    ACDC is one of the 11ty people in mitchell with a dyno there's actually only 4 but in such a small area it's a lot of competition for performance. That is why I'm not doing performance anything partly due to the competition and partly as I've never worked for a performance shop so I'm going to be down on skills/knowledge.

    I'm still trying to think of a section of the market where there's not much competition.

    Here in canberra there's ARB, TJM and Pride that cater for the 4x4 scene also pedders does a lot of 4x4 stuff.

    The French car suggestion might have been a piss take but it's not necessarily a bad idea.

    Ring around any mechanic and mention French cars and they'll suddenly be "too busy" to take a look.

    I've always steered away from them because of their horrific reputation, but after working on one for a friend I was pleasantly surprised.

    It's a potential niche and since nobody wants to touch them you don't have to charge bargain basement prices - and if you're any good you'll get a lot of repeat business because they're always broken.

    Stick to repairing and servicing stock pieces of shit (but fix them properly, don't get in the habit of half assing a job "to keep it going for another few weeks" because your customer "can't afford it".

    If they can't pay you don't do the job.

    Then build yourself a megamoo, run 30psi and smash out some mid 11s

    I had a lot of success when I was running my own workshop by offering 5% discount for repeat customers if they re-booked a service or repair within 12 months of their original service/repair invoice. Also extended the same discount to existing clients family members and saw a decent volume increase of general servicing.

    The trick is to make sure your hourly retail rate is competitive with your peers and that your own profit margin will support the discount for at least 12 months.
    I had good bulk purchase arrangement with oil and filter suppliers and would order large amounts of common filters/consumables at a time to keep the margins sustainable.
    I was only seeing about 8% return for the first 6 months but grew to about 15% within 12 months.

    The best advertising you can get for small business is word of mouth.

    Some ideas;

    Take the hassle out of the customer's experience. Be easier to deal with than your competitors. Can you do pick-ups and drop-offs? Be their primary contact for car stuff. Say, they need tyres - you can take care of it for them instead of sending them to the tyre shop. A/C needs gas? You can get it done for them, etc. Eventually you'll be able to put a margin on top or get the gear to do it yourself, but for now just do it to build good will.

    A lot of places do a half arsed job for cheap. Don't do that, ever, cause it'll ruin your reputation. Turn them away if you can't make a decent job of it for their price.

    If you've got the time, clean their windows. When they drive away their car will feel "better" because of whatever you did.

    Has the ACT gotten rid of rego stickers like NSW did? Get some small stickers with "Your registration is due **/**/**, Rdyno Automotive, 04120Rdyno" to fill out and put near the service sticker.

    None of those guys actually fix or service them though. Are you in Mitchell? The place hasnt had a specialist 4WD repair shop since Nash sold up years ago. Maybe a combination of 4WD and Euro stuff and go from there. It worked for TTS in belco
