They have a contract with v8 supercars till 2019. After that it is unlikely to remain as the owners (Victorian horse racing cunts) want to sell the land for redevelopment.

The circuit also has a question mark over it atm as it was recently assessed for fia compliance. Apparently it was recommended they do something about the lack of run off at turn 6,7 where the v8's had the huge bingle last year. The owners are unlikely to want to spend $ for this. The FIA approval is required for v8 supercars. If the circuit doesn't get it, the v8's won't run there and the circuit could be sold earlier.

I am quite pissed off about this as i live 5 minutes away and has been very convenient. I've been using it as much as i can as of late, done around 6 sprints in the last 8 months.

Will be a sad day when it happens but its a matter of when, not if and it may be sooner than thought.

About a year ago I was told by an historic motorsport person/volunteer at a car museum in Melbourne that the facility had another 7 years. I can't actually recall what this number was based on so this is indeed a /csh.

I've also been told by usually reliable sources that 2019 is the final year.

The only reason the V8s still go there these days is to cash in on the heritage-themed 500, and the history.

If it were anywhere else, they'd have fucked it off from the calander years ago.

Nelsonian, if you're going to bring the barge down, make sure you've got a fresh set of brake pads and possibly some back ups. Big cars, eat brakes at Sandown. Will be very interesting to see what time you can put down in the fg.

Thanks for the heads up re brakes.
It looks like a track that suits powerful barges.

No probs, yes it certainly does. They don't call it the home of horsepower for nothing.

My r33 barge hits just shy of 230k down the back straight with around 300rwkw, i would expect yours to go 240+. Brakes will be punished big time.

I was told it won't be long, maybe 2019. It is a great track for high horsepower. I can be competitive against a some cars in a basic MX5 at Phillip island, but at Sandown I can't catch them. I like it because it's local, but the only real fun corner is at the top of the back straight. Doesn't compare to turn 1 at the Island tho.

It's fun as long as this doesn't happen.

    Needed new jocks after that.

    Yep, this corner.

If you get it wrong it eats cars. I was there the week before on Dunlop stars specs, GPS shows exactly the same speeds. This lap was on old hard R specs. Tyres went in the bin after this. The car left the track at 165km/h, did a huge jump sideways and pushed that big heavy tyre wall about 20m. I bought another MX5 for $500 and re shelled the car over a couple of days. The car had no rollbar either :/

Concrete barriers. that sounds much better.

Turn 6 still owes me a car.

SANDOWN RACEWAY in metropolitan Melbourne will survive for at least another seven years as safety upgrades secure the track’s immediate future.
Interestingly the person I spoke to last year told me another 7 years! He was pretty much on the money. Obviously knew something the rest of us didn't.

No guarantees with Melbourne weather, could be good, could be miserably wet. I tend to wait a few days before an event to confirm weather is going to be good, still been burnt a few times and Sandown in the wet in a car with decent power is horrible.

Best advice i can give is don't book earlier than 5 days to the event and be ready to get your shit together quickly and make the trip down. The above applies all year round.

These new front brakes are starting grow on me. 6 pot staggered piston Alcons. 36mm thick floating directional rotors. H16-03 pads are 25mm thick. 1"!!!! Pics don't do them justice.
