Strange electrical starting issue - VZ L98 6L

    Morning kents.

Have a slightly strange issue with my VZ thats slowly manifested itself and now is a pretty constant annoyance. Want to advertise the car to sell it and cant really do that with the way it is so need to sort it out, and given I have zero fucking clue when it comes to electricals its best I ask here.

Basically it first begun to show itself as a weakening battery; crank would get slower to the put where on occasion, it will do the real slow wind over and then end up tripping out the start sequence so Id end up with the car going in to limp mode. Charging the battery would make the problem go away until the battery slowly died in the arse again. Fellas at work said dead cell in battery; replaced battery, 3 days later same issue. Alternator output was ok last time i checked via on board "mode" on dash display; cant remember exact figure but from memory it was over 13V at idle. Will need to check again. Its not a voltage drain as you can let the car sit for a few days and it doesnt get worse. The more you start it the worse it gets. What gives? Charge rate not high enough? Starter fucked and drawing too much load on start?

Ive no fucking idea where to start.

    N-

What volts does the battery show when cranking? Check and clean earths, should see 13.5v charge at idle

Have another look at the alternator charging rate, use a multi meter on the battery terminals with the engine running, so you can see how much charge is getting to the battery.

It should be >14 volts at idle.

I had a similar experience on a vt ls1, got to the point where it would hardly turn over at all. Was the starter motor drawing too much voltage. If alt and battery voltages check out fine, start looking and testing the starter.

Finally got a chance to actually run a multimeter over it, probably should have done it ages ago. It appears my alternator is fucked, 12V @ idle and wont change with RPM, but strangely no charge light and no warnings on dash? Whats the go here - is it completely fucked/bin it, or am i looking at voltage reg or other shit?

The one time I had a regulator fail the alternator ended up over charging as the engine revs increased.

Is it one of the computer controlled alternators? Could be a broken wire going to the control line. Pull the alternator and get it checked, let us know how it goes.

Right now, sounds like your alt is fucked.

Probably has a fried starter/alternator harness too.

I have no idea if its computer controlled or not. As youve probably gathered electricals are not my strong point. Any obvious ways to check?

    Yeah, pretty common.

Luckily a new harness is failry cheap, and about 20mins to replace.

You'll know it's fucked when you undo the main cable off the back of the alternator, and it's all stiff, or just breaks off in your hand.

Will have a poke around tonight and see whats what. Whats the likely hood its just a failed harness and not both harness/alternator?

I sent my alternator off to the sparky anway, as the power steering pump pissed all over it. Was apparently fine, but they gave it a good clean out, and threw some new bearings in it.

The harness, I found that problem out when I removed the alternator.

Ps leak is notorious for killing ls1 alts.
Turns out, far too much has been written about great men and not nearly enough about morons

Yeah, that was the basis for pulling mine apart in the first place.

I'd not considered the harness failure until I'd actually found it.
