    Windscreens - is genuine better?

Is there any reason to favour a genuine replacement windscreen as opposed to an aftermarket one?

Backstory is that nopics' Cruze might need a windscreen replacement. There's nothing fancy about it, no HUD or sensors or anything attached to it - but am I likely to end up with thinner glass or a poor fit etc if I just go with whatever the windscreen guys bring?

Never had issues with non gen windsreens in the past. We average 1 a year on the vans. Only time non gen has bitten us was the driver's door window on one van isn't tinted. I'd be more worried about the quality of the job.

95% of the time it will be fine and you wonít notice any difference. Poor fit is usually more a poor installer issue than poor screen issue. On odd occasions aftermarket screens come out with distortions which should be picked up in quality control and shouldnít be accepted. Most installers donít care enough to check the glass before or after installation and wonít be real excited about fixing problems.

Genuine will be much more expensive, but ultimately a good installer will make more of a difference.

Going through insurance? Or out of own pocket?

i've had a couple of non-genuine front windows which all had visible distortions when looking through off the sides, used to piss me off but not enough to really worry about.

Not sure any genuine Cruze part could be considered better quality than anything aftermarket.

Same with my Merc C Class, would not replace screen with very noticeable distortion saying it met ADR criteria.

So I paid the dollars and had a genuine one put in at my own cost. Will never bother claiming a windscreen
through Shannons again for my Merc. Holdens etc no worries, not the Merc.

Can be a prick with thinner glass, then I'd always go genuine. i.e. Seals are different etc. Have a look at DC2R Honda Integras with bad aftermarket windscreens. I imagine it will be a similar situation with Renaultsport models with thinner screens. It's easier to get them when the cars are still on sale, after they become older the part supply dry up. Porsche RS GT3 & similar high $ models with thin screens would prob be better supported as the cars age.

If you have replacement windscreen cover, just book it into holden dealer and have them replace with factory item

Same story here, WO'B fitted a non genuine screen to my Outback and it's very distorted. Within ADR tolerances apparently, so I have to deal with it. Also forgot to reset the stupid Eye Sight thing and didn't attach the rain sensor for the wipers. Not a 5/7 job.

We had WOB do a Camry screen at work, fuck me what an effort to book it in. Asking stupid questions like does it have auto braking etc.

Then it took the guy over two hours to replace it.

Ps. We had to use them for contractual reasons.

    That's not a stupid question.

I already gave him the Vin, told him it was a base model, told him the year and month, and the model number. Yet he still asked if it had the auto stop feature, i told him it didnt.
He then told me he pretty sure it does have it, again I said no it doesnt.
He then said he'd ring me back.
Called me back and said they didnt have the screen in stock and couldnt get in for a week.
Then called back again, and said they could now do it in two days.

They probably get a fair few people who wouldn't have the most basic knowledge of their cars and so can't trust what anyone tells them. You've only got to look at Carsales and Gumtree ads where the description doesn't match the photos etc.

Years ago I needed a windscreen put in my RB Gemini. I knew this was a totally different car to the TX-TG series and specified that when booking. All the same, the windscreen guy turned up with an RB screen and a TX-TG screen just in case I had no idea.

I have a non genuine windscreen and the visual distortion is fucking AIDS. You do get used to it but if I ever need a new one I will go straight back to oem. Part of me considers just doing it anyway.

The rear view mirror it came with is a pile of shit compared to oem as well.

This worked out well. Highly recommend Keys Autoglass in Canberra.

The new windscreen is in fact genuine, by the same manufacturer as OEM - it just doesnít have the GM logo on it. Everything else is the same.

IIRC there are only 2 or three places world wide that make windscreens.
