GU patrol RD28 - shrieking like a banshee

I have a gu patrol with the mighty RD28 engine. It has a decent amount of oil in the cooler pipes, so I added a provent knock-off catchcan.
There is still much oil in the cooler pipes and minimal oil in the catch can. However this week it developed an awesome shriek that sometimes turns up at higher revs. Sometimes it stops as the revs drop, sometimes it doesn't. Only seems to appear when hot though.

No-pics drove it home in full scream mode yesterday and there was a bad burnt rubber smell. I looked at all the belts and no signs of rubbing and trying to melt through to the pulleys or anything like that. Nopics assures me the smell is coming from the rear of the engine.

Looking at the turbo, there is not much shaft play, but the end play is around 2mm with no signs of contact thus far. So I figure that probably isn't the best. I had it running without the cooler pipes on in the shed and everything sounded fine, although the shed wall now sports considerable oil splatter.

Being new to actually working on turbos, I'm pretty sure the turbo needs a rebuild. A new garrett is $1350 ish. A cheap china job is $270. A rebuild kit is less than $100.

While I assume this will fix the oil problem, was this the cause for the sounds of a cat stuck in my engine?

    My votes (in order)
    1. Aircon clutch destroying itself
    2. Crank pulley destroying itself
    3. Turbo wheel rubbing on housing
    4. Boost leak
Don't worry, thats just the self-preservation instinct, in my experience you can safely ignore it.

I checked 3, and it seems fine.
    I tightened everything, so shouldn't be 4.

It only seems to happen when hot, so I'll take it for a drive with my listening tube (from the shop vac) and see if I can pinpoint it a little better. It's pretty damn loud, like I can tell there's something wrong with your car from 20m away loud.

Turbos dying generally don't create burning rubber smell. New good one should though, except it's on an RD28 so it will probably just prevent it from being slower than a sundial.

I reckon the balancer outer has debonded from the rubber. Had it happen to the 530D.

"The new model is something like two thousand cubic inches, developing two hundred brake-horsepower at four thousand revolutions per minute on a magnesium frame with two styrofoam seats and a total curb weight of exactly two hundred pounds."

All of its problems will be fixed with a Barra T conversion.

This. It will be manifold to turbo gasket.
