Road rules should be nationalised, brought to you by a visit to the ACT

As well as this there should be national rules for registration and roadworthiness, and etc. This would save money by removing excess people from the licencing and registrating system and putting them on the dole.

Case in point I was in the ACT for a while and instead of having "left lane ends" they have "form X lanes" which is stupid, as they still have on-lanes marked out like "left lane ends" rather that "fight it out, fuckers"

In the case of a two lane road becoming a one lane road "form one lane" is silly because both cars think they are equal, which they aren't so neither driver knows what they need to do and drivers in the ACT have already got enough to think about apparently.

"left lane ends" is better because the driver in the ending lane knows he needs to get into the other lane, and the driver in the continuing lane knows he needs to stay in his lane and either let in or cut off the driver trying to get into it.

In the case of "Form n Lanes" (from n+1 lanes) it is stupid because as only two lanes have to do anything why force the people in all the other lanes to think about what is going on and have to look to see if their lane marking suddenly dissapear?

    wankers.

Yeah, I treat it like NSW as well.

The left merges into the right. Not "Woah, where the fuck did my lane go?".

Except the road rules are pretty clear when it comes to who has right of way. Lane-one-form = car in front goes first. Left land ends = car in continuing lane goes first.

At least they are signposted in Canberra - most of the ones in Wollongong just stop the dividing line randomly without any signs or road markings.

Its effectively a right of way zipper merge. Pretty bloody simple, and works a hell of a lot better than the 'left lane ends, and so do all lane markings' that they have down here.

One for one is still the way to do it in Victoria unless you are a complete cunt. I always let people from the ending lane in if they are in front of me (they have to cross the dotted line first, which I will admit is a problem with "left lane ends" even though it is a driver problem)

I'm more talking about when there are two cars side by side and not much other traffic on the road, in politician land nobody has a rightful claim to go first, if you are in the left lane that is ending you know you had better get in your place behind the car in the superior continuing lane.

I can tell them that: they make people crash in to each other slower.

Iíve driven all over our country and a few of other peoples. Generally Australian standards are very poor. We are impatient and arrogant on the roads (me included).

Canberra drivers are endemic red light runners. Iíve never seen anywhere so bad! But zipper merging they are generally very very good. I was super impressed when I moved here usually when someone is being a dick when merging they have vic or nsw plates lol

I firmly believe having both lanes end at the same time to merge instead of the left lane merging to the center lane has reduced The aggro immensely.

I do this in heavy traffic.

I let one, and only one car in, then move forward. If it's old mate's lucky day, the car behind me will let him in.

I've had a few people sook about it, when they've tried to push in.

Look of confusion on their face when you tell them it's not their turn is a worry.

Yeah, I hate it when some cunt is right up the arse of the car you're letting in i.e. basically even with you. And then cracks the shits when you don't slow for them as well. Merge behind me, dickhead

SAMe. It happens a LOT less in the ACT with Form One Lane arrangements as opposed to Left Lane Ends.

^ Do you think it's because of how ACT drivers are trained or some sub-conscious effect of Form One Lane (instead of Left Lane Ends)?

Never mind that in the Northern Territory you can tow a trailer at any speed but cross the border into W.A. and you are limited to 100 kph rather than the 110 kph speed limit ?

This. Or people who do it the other way around and won't let you in, even worse when your lane isn't actually ending - both are.

I'd like to see them advertise more common courtesy measures - in NZ they have 'Merge like a zip' signs everywhere. I'd like to see a few of those along with 'Keep left unless overtaking' and a statement that it's the law and there is a fine involved as well. There's one particular road I occasionally take to work and it's full of soccer mums in 4WDs sitting in the right hand lane at 20 under the limit, and half of them go apeshit when you undertake.

Road signs don't work. In fact, most signs anywhere don't work. We see so many that we stop taking notice.

This is the Warrego Hwy every time I go to work. It's like no-one in this entire region understands what lanes are or why they exist.

SA is funny in this regard, the dotted line just stops. No signage, no 'Form 2 Lanes', just two 2.5m lanes suddenly becoming one 5m wide, and narrowing down over the next ~50m or so.

Yep. Fuck the Warrego, I did that for a year too.

Some of them go absolutely nuts about it too. I've had ironic rounds of applause, head shaking, flashing of the lights and the works. I'm not talking about cutting in front of them either, I'm talking travelling the speed limit in the left hand lane and not going anywhere near them. Bloody hoons in their hoon cars. Meanwhile, completely breaking the law and getting upset at someone who isn't.

That was daily commute to Gatton for 18 months in both directions....

Even better was going through the roadworks at the speed limit and have them sail past you giving you the death state and then they were either photographed by plod, or went absolutely apeshit when you passed them again in 100 zone as they still cruised at 80.

People from interstate treating it like NSW are the problem! Almost all of the near-accidents I've had in this situation have been people on the right hand side thinking they have priority over me merging from the left.

It works pretty well most of the time. You don't get timid people stuck in the ending left lane hoping someone will finally let them into the right lane. Most people adopt a one for one approach, or it's as simple as the car in front wins.

I'm not sure why OP thinks they are line marked the same way as NSW - they are not. I can't think of anywhere in the ACT where they are.

Most people who live in the ACT did not grow up in the ACT, and probably didn't learn to drive here either. So I think it's just that people recognise it's a fairly good system once they're used to it.

I'll tell you who can get fucked: those cunts on a busy freeway onramp who think that their entitled merge point is 200m further up the road than everyone patiently zippering in front of them.

Weird or poor road design is also to blame. Sometimes you have the reverse confusion when 2 lanes spreads to 3; the road designers for some reason will throw what is effectively a chicane on a straight road to redirect your lane. Often you'll see cars continue driving straight, effectively changing lanes without indicating and they're none the wiser.

agree, zippering was the way to go back when I was commuting over the Westgate bridge, let in one and only one person worked well. man would people get angry when you didn't let them in after you had already let the car in front of them in though.

I mean specifically when two separate roads join, sometimes they join, then the island becomes a broken line, then the "form two lanes" happens, where there isn't room for this the joining lane/road merges with the straight lane/road with a broken line.

I'm comparing the ACT to Victoria mainly, didn't notice anything funny on NSW roads but highways are pretty consistent.

They don't even teach 4/5/6-way stops in driver's ed anymore here. Nor do they teach traffic circles, or how to merge onto a limited access highway. Also no one knows the laws for right-turns-on-red...but then again it's just like in AU-every one of our 50 states has differing traffic laws. Even so...it's rare to find someone who isn't brain dead, or on their cell phone.

Kentucky rules, as I was taught in "you fucked up" traffic school.

    All-stop intersections:
All vehicles must come to a complete stop behind the white demarcation line. All. Vehicles. Must. Stop.
The vehicle arriving and stopping first, has the right of way. Right of way passes to each successive vehicle-so pay attention to where you are in line!
If vehicles cannot decide order, one vehicle goes and the right of way passes clockwise. Pay attention.

    Right Turn on Red:
Must turn right from rightmost lane into rightmost lane.
May not make turn from red light if any traffic present.
May not make turn from red if not in rightmost lane, even if you are in a right turn lane.
Must come to a complete stop before making right turn.
Left turn on red follows same rules but only when turning left from the leftmost lane onto a one-way street, following proper direction of traffic.

There are plenty of other bullshit traffic laws, but the above two and fucking turn signals are the ones that are completely, totally ignored in my locality.

We cant have left lane ends, or right lanes for that matter, due to most of us being public servants. We cant be seen favoring the left or the right. We are suppose to remain neutral.
